No sun? No problem! Our Cool-Climate Shade Garden Kit is the perfect solution for shady spots in cooler climates. Complete with three different types of plants, this convenient, three-in-one kit will satisfy all your shade garden needs. We’ve hand-picked these complimentary shade varieties, so you don’t have to search!

This kit comes with:

  • 4 Skip Laurel Shrubs
  • 3 Endless Summer Hydrangeas
  • 6 Brilliance Autumn Ferns

  • The perfect mix of colors and textures
, the Cool-Climate Shade Garden Kit provides an eye-catching combination for reliable garden interest. The Skip Laurel is a dense, evergreen, low-maintenance shrub, perfect for creating the hardiest of hedges.  It will produce white, candle-like flowers in spring and dark berries in fall and winter.

The Endless Summer Hydrangea is one of the most popular Hydrangea options, so you know it’s a solid landscape choice. With pops of blues and pinks, depending on soil pH, this beauty provides long-blooming, gorgeous flowers that take your landscape to the next level.

Last, but not least, the Brilliance Autumn Fern is known for its bright orange-red color, easy care and ability to thrive in the shade. Enjoy its feathery form and bold, contrasting color!

Mixed together, these beautiful, made-for-shade plants create a stunning display, and they’ll make your landscaping easy-as-can-be! Ideal for medium-sized yards, these plants are great for combining in a staggered, row formation, covering about 30 feet of space. Or, try spacing them out more in a single layer to cover about 45 feet of landscape. Either way, their varying hues, heights and textures will weave through your yard and quickly fill those empty, shade-filled spaces.

No more searching for plants that will tolerate your shaded yard - the Cool-Climate Shade Garden Kit is the easy answer! Order yours today and craft the showy shade garden that landscapers dream of!

Note: If your skip laurel arrives with holes or damaged leaves, don’t be alarmed! Laurels do not like being in containers, so it is very common for this cosmetic damage to occur. Once plant your Laurel in the ground, new growth will emerge happy, healthy and hole-free. If you have any concerns, don’t hesitate to contact us!

    Planting & Care

    1. Planting:

    • Skip Laurel: First, select a location with well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade – any area with about 4 to 6 hours of sunlight should suffice. When you’re ready to plant, dig a hole that’s about three times the width of your plant’s root ball, and place your plant.
    • Endless Summer Hydrangea: Soil content is important for Hydrangeas because it should drain well yet also maintain sufficient moisture. Also, the acidity levels of the soil will have a direct impact on the color of your flowers. For deep blue flowers, keep pH below 5.5. For pink or red flowers, neutralize soil to pH 7.0 or higher.
    • When you're ready to plant, dig the planting hole 2 feet wider than the root ball and to a depth of the tip of the root ball. Set the Hydrangea in the hole, making sure it is not planted too deeply. Finally, water to settle the roots.
    • Brilliance Autumn Fern: Place in an area with dappled shade (3-5 hrs per day), and dig a hole large enough to accommodate its roots. The Brilliance Autumn Fern Plant grows and spreads easily via underground stems.

    2. Watering:

    • Skip Laurel: Once established, your Skip Laurel is relatively drought-tolerant, but it’s important to have a regular watering schedule for the first few growing seasons. Water about once weekly or check the surrounding soil about 2 or 3 inches down.
    • Endless Summer Hydrangea: Give your Hydrangea an inch of water each week. This includes any rainfall. If you're not sure when and how much to water, simply check the surrounding soil about 2 inches down. If the soil is dry here, it's time to water until it's moist.
    • Brilliance Autumn Fern:  Rainfall should be enough to sustain your Brilliance Autumn Fern Plant unless you experience severe long-term drought. In that case, simply check the soil for dryness about 4 inches down.

    3. Pruning:

    • Skip Laurel: You may want to consider pruning if you are using them as a hedge; left unclipped, you'll get white, candle-like flowers with red berries in autumn and winter. To clip into a hedge, simply shear to your desired shape and height in the fall or winter.
    • Endless Summer Hydrangea: Prune in the spring to remove dead tips from winter. These Hydrangeas bloom on new wood, so you can also prune back in the fall or early spring for shaping without worry - it'll grow and bloom again!
    • Brilliance Autumn Fern: Prune only dead fronds as needed.

    4. Fertilizing:

    • Skip Laurel: You'll want to use a shrub and tree fertilizer, unless a soil test shows that nutrients are low or missing. If the soil is missing or low on nutrients, use a nutrient-specific fertilizer.
    • Endless Summer Hydrangea: Fertilize your Hydrangeas once in the summer prior to August. Apply a good time-release fertilizer at this time, only one time during the year. Discontinue fertilizing if the plant appears wilted or unhealthy.
    • Brilliance Autumn Fern: Fertilizing your fern is not necessary, but you may consider adding some compost upon planting to enrich the soil.
