Product Description

Cold Hardy and Ultra-Chic

Defined by its unique, fast-growing appearance and cold hardy strength, Black Bamboo is a well-curated choice for indoors or outdoors. And since it's low-maintenance and hassle-free, it's perfect for beginner gardeners.

But what sets the Black Bamboo apart?

For starters, the Black Bamboo withstands temperatures down to 10 degrees, making it one of the hardiest Bamboo varieties available. Gardeners in far-North states can plant their Bamboo in pots, then bring them inside for the winter.

Best of all, this tree's striking appearance is second to none. When your tree arrives, the shoots will be green. By the second year, (or even sooner!) they'll transition to a flat black colorLush, deep green foliage provides an interesting contrast that is incomparable to other bamboos. It's an amazing addition to any garden as a focal point, or a central part of your home decor.

Plus, it's a fast, durable grower that will claim 10 to 12 feet each year, ultimately reaching 25 feet in height. And since it's easy to tame, you can trim it to the height you desire. Some of our customers order several and plant them 3 to 5 feet apart to create a privacy screen.

Effortlessly versatile and lush - is there anything better? We grow your Black Bamboo in their own containers from the very beginning, so you'll get a full, healthy root system that establishes quickly and explodes with new growth without all the work. More roots mean more canes that are healthy, thick and vigorous. Order your own Black Bamboo for instant luxuriance today!

Great trees

I love my bamboo! Came to my doorstep packed great. Alive and plentiful. Followed the instructions on planting since I added fertilizer and soil. Planted them in a huge pot on my porch. They shot up fast and already grew 5 more stalks!

Love my black bamboo!

I got 2 of the black bamboo plants this past November and planted them immediately. I live in Southeastern VA near the NC border. I was concerned about how late in the season I was putting them in the ground, but we had a mild winter and they seemed to be okay. As soon as the weather began to warm up, quite a few new shoots appeared and are growing quickly. The older shoots are a gorgeous matte black. I'm really hoping these are back in stock soon because I'd like to create a screen with them and I don't trust getting them from another online seller.

Survived hurricanes and cold winter

I’m in costal Virginia Beach and my black bamboo is in a pot currently waiting to be put into the ground this spring. It’s sitting on the south side of The house and getting plenty of sun all day long. I mix the soil with our clay soil and it seems to be doing fine! Before the cold weather arrived, it was growing about an inch a day, but now that the winters here it’s sort of stopped growing. I don’t know if that’s normal. It’s still really full of leaves though. I am looking forward to spring time when I can put it in the ground.

We're so glad to hear that your bamboo is doing so well! Growth will slow down during the winter months but once the temperatures warm up, you'll start seeing lots of new growth again! Thank you for taking the time to leave a review and let us know if we can help with anything!

Planting & Care

Growing Bamboo will add beauty and character while helping to create a tropical look few other plants can achieve.  Follow these easy steps to quickly and successfully grow Bamboo in your desired location.

Location: For best results, Bamboo will thrive in warm temperatures. Give your Bamboo a sunny spot that will provide some shade in the winter.  The combination of sun and frost in the winter can actually dehydrate the plant.  Bamboo prefers loamy soil which contains a mixture of sand, silt and clay and offers good drainage.  Also, since the Bamboo’s root system is shallow, provide protection from high winds.

Planting Instructions:
1) Dig a hole with the same depth as the plant’s container and about twice its width.  Do not dig too deep or narrow as this will prevent the rhizomes from getting the necessary oxygen and nutrients.
2) Mix 1 part organic compost into the removed soil.  Do not use manure which can harm the young plant.
3) Carefully place the Bamboo plant in the hole.
4) Fill the Hole with the removed soil mixture making sure the plant is level and taking care not to damage the delicate roots of the Bamboo.
5) Remove any air pockets that may have formed while filling the hole.
6) Test the sturdiness of the plant once in the ground to make sure winds will not be able to topple it.
7) Water generously to the entire planting area and firm down the surrounding soil.

Watering: Water your Bamboo between 2-5 times each week as necessary.  Water frequency will differ depending on the time of year and local climate conditions.  Cooler locations typically require less frequent watering than warmer areas.

Fertilization: Once your Bamboo becomes established you should implement a regular fertilizing schedule.  A high nitrogen organic fertilizer is the best choice for Bamboo. You can apply a standard lawn fertilizer high in nitrogen.  Apply once in the summer and again in the fall.

Winter Protection: Keep your Bamboo protected from freezing temperatures and high winds.  It’s not actually the frost that will damage the Bamboo but the lack of moisture, so be sure to water as necessary.  The best protection against winds is to provide a location that can deflect direct winds and to make sure a strong root system is established while the plant is young.

*Cover the planting area with a layer of mulch to help protect the roots and rhizomes.
*Use an organic mulch which will help promote healthy and vigorous growth, preserve moisture, and protect the plant from pests.
