The White Pussy Willow Shrub is the perfect choice for every yard. If you're looking for a tall, flowering shrub that doesn’t require a lot of maintenance, consider the White Pussy Willow as the next addition to your landscape. This unique and decorative shrub grows to a height of 15'-25' and adds interest to every yard.
Not a common, household plant, you might be asking, what is a Pussy Willow? The White Pussy Willow Shrub is unlike anything else. Dark, tall branches shoot upright from the roots and on them grow beautiful silvery-white blooms called catkins. What are catkins? Well, they get their name (as does the plant) from their furry appearance that is reminiscent of a cat paw. You've probably seen the branches and catkins in floral arrangements. The slim branches and fuzzy blooms add interesting contrast against bright flowers.
An early bloom adds excitement while everything is still dormant. The catkins begin to blossom in late winter and early spring, well before most other flowering plants. While the rest of your garden is dormant and void of color, the fuzzy little blooms of the White Pussy Willow Shrub will let you know that winter is ending.
Everything about the Pussy Willow is gorgeous through every season. The early blooming catkins are certainly a delight to see, but the great thing about this plant is that is looks beautiful and adds interest to your yard in every season. In summer, bright green leaves appear, which turn into to showy autumn colors. Of course, the bare upright branches and the burgundy-hued buds add even more curb appeal in the winter. There's never a dull season with this shrub.
The Pussy Willow loves to grow! It's hard to go wrong with this flowering shrub. Typically growing around 2 ft. per year, this willow will show off for you soon after you plant it. It doesn't care about soil conditions and you don't need to fertilize it or worry about pests and diseases. The only thing the White Pussy Willow needs is a good source of water and an annual pruning. You'll loving watching this tree grow without you.
Multiple Pussy Willows make a great privacy hedge. The branches grow closely together and since the shrub reaches a height of over 15 ft., this plant makes a beautiful privacy hedge. Some natural hedges can be overpowering, but a White Pussy Willow Hedge can serve the function of privacy without intimidating your garden.
Create exciting floral arrangements and decorations. One of the most fun aspects of this plant is thinking of all the ways you can decorate with it. If you clip a branch with buds, and then bring it inside to place in a vase with water, you'll force the bud to bloom. Within a week you'll have a prized decoration that you can add around the house. Go ahead and search "decorate with pussy willow," you'll be inspired by the possibilities!

Planting & Care
Planting Instructions: The White Pussy Willow Shrub is easy to plant. You'll get more catkin blooms if you plant it in an area with more light. Choose a spot that gets 4-6 hours of sun each day. IF you have a particularly boggy area of your yard where nothing else will grow, plant it there. Pussy Willows grow great near ponds or other water sources.
Keep in mind, the Pussy Willow's roots are massive, deep and thirsty. Make sure you know where your water and sewer lines are and don't plant them near it. Your Pussy Willow's roots will naturally migrate to those water sources. After planting, you can add a thick layer of mulch around the base of the shrub to help the plant retain moisture.
How to Grow a Pussy Willow
Growing a pussy willow is easy. There's not a lot of maintenance since they thrive in most soil condition and are disease and pest resistance. Just follow the simple advice below to grow your pussy willow.
Watering: The Pussy Willow likes water, but rain is usually enough. If you live in a dry area, you may need to water once a week. During dry spells or droughts, watering twice a week may be necessary.
Fertilization: There's no need to fertilize your Pussy Willow. It will grow quickly without extra help.
Pruning: Start pruning after the second year of growth. There are many ways to prune a Pussy Willow, but the easiest thing to do is to remove all the branches every winter. Your shrub will have a bulbous area that the branches grow out of. Simple cut of all the branches above that bulbous area in the winter before the new growth starts. You can also just prune weaker branches and any branches that aren't upright, but it's often easier to just prune the entire tree.
