Butterfly Bush Is Beautiful

This is a 3 gallon bush and it arrived in excellent condition. I cannot wait to see it bloom. I love ordering from Fast Growing Trees because I don't have to worry about the quality of the item. They pack it in a way that it arrives unbroken and it isn't wilted. I also purchased an Autumn Blaze Red Maple tree too. Thank you for caring about plants as much as I do!

Great addition!

I ordered these for my hummingbird/ Butterfly landscape/garden. I planted as soon as they arrived. They have already started showing signs of new growth. Can not what till spring to see all the blooms. I will be ordering more. Great addition

Died the next year

I thought these would do really well but then in the spring of the following year they all died Do not know why because they really took off very disappointed

Did not survive

Unprecedented heat in Central Texas did not allow this poor thing to survive. I had it cared for by a nursery -- not a big box store. RIP little bush

Not a good choice

Bush did not survive the winter in western Colorado. I see these bushes all over Grand Junction so I guess I need to purchase them here where they are cultivated.

Planting & Care

The Black Knight Butterfly Bush (Buddleia 'Black Knight’) is a gorgeous deep purple shrub that blooms from early summer until autumn. These amazing plants are adored by hummingbirds and butterflies and make wonderful additions to your landscape. They reach a height/width of 4-6 feet and are recommended for USDA growing zones 5-9. Butterfly bushes will thrive to the best of their potential in a full sunlight area.

Choosing a location: Select a location that receives ample sunlight, full sun will be best. These plants prefer 6+ hours of direct sunlight daily. Although preferring full sunlight, they can still do well in a partially shaded spot. This still means they would still need at least 2-4 hours of direct morning sunlight and they can tolerate afternoon shade.

Planting directions:
1) After choosing your area, dig a hole that is twice as wide and just as deep as the container that the plant arrives in.
2) Carefully remove the plant from the container. Lightly tapping around the base will help to loosen the root ball if it is difficult to remove.
3) Lightly comb the ball with your fingers to loosen the roots so that they spread out more quickly.
4) Place your plant in the hole so that the top of the soil is even with the surrounding soil level.
5) Backfill with a mixture of native soil and compost. These plants like rich soil so you can use a 50/50 mixture of compost and native soil to add additional nutrients.
6) Water after every few inches to settle the soil and remove any air pockets that may have formed. Tamp the soil well when done.
7) Water well when done and cover the area with mulch to protect the roots and help them conserve moisture. Be sure the mulch is not touching the tree or rot and fungus may set in.

Watering: Ensure the area has well draining soil, drainage is essential. Once planted, to help the soil stay moist around these plants, you will need to water your Butterfly Bush deeply and mulch to conserve soil moisture. The soil must be moist at least 6-8 inches deep. Once watered, allow the soil to dry out before watering again.

Pruning: These plants can be pruned annually. You can remove spent blooms on the plant to encourage more blooms to come out on the bush. Butterfly Bushes can also be pruned to not only shape them, but to encourage more aggressive new growth. You can prune them towards the ground to accomplish this. It can be done during the plant's dormancy period either in late fall to early winter or during the spring.

Fertilization: Butterfly Bushes rarely need fertilizer unless you are dealing with poor soil conditions. If that is the case, you can uses a slow release fertilizer for your plants. Follow the instructions on the package of your fertilizer and be certain to water deeply afterwards. Be cautious of high nitrogen fertilizers that will encourage more foliage but less blooms.

Pests: Butterfly Bushes for the most part are not bothered by pests. However, they can have issues with Spider Mites and caterpillars from time to time. Both insects are easily treatable with insecticidal soap. If they remain on the plant you can use something stronger like Neem Oil or Bacillus thuringiensis.
