Product Description

A Hint of the Sea in the Garden

Redefined by its bi-pinnate leaves that look just like fishtail fins, the Fishtail Palm (aptly named) wows. Unlike regular palms’ feather-like fronds, the Fishtail Palm’s foliage is tightly organized in a herringbone fashion.

Its deep-green leaflets sprout from common points on each branch, are identical to each other and have tattered edges.

And this special palm tree foliage really puts on a show when it catches a breeze. Stand beneath the Fishtail Palm’s thick, swirled layers of greenery, and you’ll be delighted by an immense school of swimming fish!

Even better? It's fairly cold hardy. The Fishtail Palm prefers temperatures above 55 degrees, but this steady-grower has no problem when the temperatures dip, and can even survive light frosts. This is significant because not all palm trees can tolerate the cold.

Basically, this sleek and hardy tree is tough and will withstand wind, drought, and prolonged periods without direct sunlight. It will do well all on its own, developing a lovely, semi-vase-shaped growth habit. Look no further for a palm that will bring warmth and interest into your space - without substantial upkeep.

A tropical privacy screen is just a click away. Fishtail Palms sprout from a multi-trunk “cluster” that makes the rainforest go-to a fantastic privacy screen. With just one tree, you’ll get dense vertical growth that becomes completely opaque. Growers in growing zones 9 through 11 often space Fishtail Palms 4 to 6 feet apart and, as the fronds mingle, they form a wall of healthy foliage.

This palm can also stand lots of pruning, even close to the ground. You can freely sculpt the Fishtail Palm to fit your space since its llush growth is dense enough to block out light and sound. Plus, the Fishtail Palm is a favorite container plant because it does so well indoors, needing little humidity. Since it’s shallow-rooted, the Fishtail does not need frequent re-potting. Water the plant regularly, place in well-draining soil, prune occasionally, and you’ll gain a one-of-a-kind, indoor palm tree.

Best of all, the Fishtail Palm saves money. Seriously. Studies have shown that shade trees like the Fishtail Palm not only cool the air around them but can also reduce heating bills 20 to 50% with their shade.

Bought a tree - received a bush!

I bought a 4-5' tall tree and received a 3' bush with many spots on the leaves. Not impressed and very disappointed. I should have known better because this happened to me about 6 months ago as well. I purchased what was supposed to be a Japanese Blueberry tree and received once again a small bush. Perhaps these both will eventually grow up to be trees, but please be honest and say; you are buying a bush and hopefully someday they will grow up to be a tree.

Great little palm!

We had planned to plant it outside but too hot so we put it in a pot and are keeping it in our screened in sun room. It is already getting new shoots sprouting up above the current branches! Great choice.

Planting & Care

Location: The fishtail palm, also known as the "Caryota urens," grows best in USDA plant hardiness zones 9 and 10. The palm tree also grows well in containers and will perform fine indoors. Its compact growth habit makes it a favorite palm for growing inside sunrooms or on lanais.

Planting Instructions: The fishtail palm grows best in full sun or partial shade. When grown in full sunlight, it will usually require regular supplemental watering to keep the soil around it from drying out.

The tree’s compact size and clustering growth habits make it a good choice to plant beside a home or patio. Space the tree at least six feet from the structure. When planting the palm by a walkway, space it at least 8 feet away to provide adequate room. The fishtail palm is often planted in clumps to form a hedge or shield. If planting the palm for privacy, space the trees at least four feet apart.

Choose a planting location with well-draining soil. The fishtail palm will grow in most soil types.

Dig a hole at least twice the size of the tree’s root ball. Place the tree’s roots into the hole and gently spread out the roots. Add a mixture of organic matter to the soil around the tree’s roots and tamp the soil down to remove all air pockets. After planting, water the tree thoroughly.

Container Growth: Choose a pot that is at least two or three inches larger in diameter than the tree’s root system. Plant the tree in a lightweight soil mixture. Place the potted palm outdoors in bright, indirect sunlight or next to a south-facing window indoors so it receives adequate light.

Water the palm when the first two inches of soil dries out but do not let the soil completely dry. The tree only requires repotting when its roots start to emerge from the pot’s drainage holes.

When grown indoors, the tree does appreciate a weekly spritzing with water to increase the humidity around the tree and keep its fronds from drying out. The fishtail palm prefers an indoor humidity level of 50 percent or higher.

Use a slow-release fertilizer in the spring and summer on the potted palm. Follow the directions on the fertilizer’s label for application ratios.

Watering: Keep the soil moist around the fishtail palm after first planting so it establishes a strong root system. Once established, the tree requires only weekly watering to thrive.

Fertilizer:  Feed the palm monthly using liquid, all-purpose fertilizer.  Follow the directions on the fertilizer for application ratios. It's usually a good idea to use the fertilizer right after watering to reduce the risk of root burn.

Pruning: Prune away damaged or dead fronds at ground level and discard. The palm rarely requires any trimming to maintain its looks.

Pests and Disease: Exceptionally hardy, the fishtail palm rarely suffers from pests or disease. Container grown fishtail palms may occasionally experience a scale or red spider mite issue but this is easily remedied by applying Neem oil.

Frost Protection: The fishtail palm does not tolerate frost and steps should be taken to protect the tree such as covering with a frost blanket. Potted palms can be brought indoors or placed in a sheltered location if the temperature dips below freezing.
