An Evergreen that Shines Bright!

Your Newest Star
A shrub on a stick may not sound terribly appealing, but take one look at this grafted Blue Star Juniper and you'll be picking them up by the dozen. Silvery blue needles adorn the branches of this tree-like ornamental specimen, appearing as bundled stars.

It's a great look for a Japanese or rock garden, or as a stand-alone feature on a patio or balcony.

Plant and Forget
Whether in the garden or a container, the Blue Star is about as low-maintenance as it gets. It prefers full sun and well-drained soil, and is even resistant to deer, disease, and drought.

Occasional light pruning may be necessary, but this is a slow-growing tree that will give you time to worry about more important things.

Versatility Defined
Graft a compact plant on a standard and it'll have all sorts of uses:
- Ornamental specimen
- Japanese garden
- Rock garden
- Mediterranean garden
- Vertical accent
- Foundation planting

Dreaming of a Blue Christmas
Who says you have to wait until the holidays for a colorful, ornamental tree? This juniper's striking blue color pairs perfectly next to green or gold foliage and stays blue throughout the winter. Pick one up, and you'll have a gift that keep on giving all year round.

Planting & Care

It's Easy to Plant & Care for Your Juniper 'Blue Star' - On Standard

Step 1: Dig Your Hole

Select a site with full to partial sun and moist or well drained soil for your Juniper 'Blue Star' - On Standard.

First, dig each hole so that it is just shallower than the root ball and at least twice the width.

Then loosen the soil in the planting hole so the roots can easily break through.

Use your shovel or try dragging the points of a pitch fork along the sides and bottom of the hole.

Planting & Care

Step 2: Place Your Plant

Next, separate the roots of your Juniper 'Blue Star' - On Standard gently with your fingers and position them downward in the hole.

The top of the root flare, where the roots end and the trunk begins, should be about an inch above the surrounding soil.

Then make sure the plant is exactly vertical in the hole.

To make it just right, use a level.

Step 3: Backfill Your Hole

As you backfill the hole, apply water to remove air pockets.

Remove debris like stones and grass and completely break up any dirt clumps.

Water your Juniper 'Blue Star' - On Standard again after the transplant is complete.

can the Blue Star handle morning sun and afternoon shade?

BEST ANSWER: ours seem to prefer that
We live in Boston, MA and are interested in purchasing the Juniper "Blue Star" for our southern exposure condominium balcony. We are interested in growing the tree in a cast iron pot and assume it will survive our zone 6 winters because previously we owned a small juniper (grown in a pot on our balcony for many years) but lost it during last years’ unusually cold winter. Would you agree that our growing conditions are satisfactory? Please advise. Thanks, Charyl

Yes the Juniper Blur Star should survive. It is zoned 4-8, however if you think you are going to have conditions like last year be prepared to winterize it.
How do I trim my blue star juniper tree? It is three years old and getting large for the courtyard mulch bed.
