Shade-Loving, Silver-Green Fern

Why Japanese Painted Ferns?

This luminescent, silver-green fern will add dimension to your landscape while occupying all your empty, shaded spaces! The Japanese Painted Fern thrives in less than sunny locations and adds an eclectic, yet sophisticated feeling to the landscape.

The short, mounding growth habit of its foliage makes it perfect for the foreground of your garden beds and borders or even containers. And its airy, blue-green fronds create an eye-catching display, especially when they sway gently in the breeze. Plus, its purple-burgundy central ribs fade to silver at the edges for a truly unique appeal.

Declared 2004’s Perennial Plant of the Year, the Japanese Painted Fern flourishes under the right conditions. Just plant it in well-draining, rich soil in a fully to partially shaded location and watch it thrive.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Plant your Japanese Painted Fern in full to partial shade. It’s important to choose a location that does not receive afternoon sun. Ensure you’re planting in dirt that's very well draining to allow this plant to thrive. Dig a hole that is 2-3x the width of the container your plant is shipped in and the same depth. Remove the plant from the container, loosen the roots with your fingers, and then place into the hole. Backfill the dirt and immediately water.

2. Watering: Continue to water your Japanese Painted Fern frequently until the plant is established. Once established, water to maintain moisture in the soil.

3. Pruning: Prune as needed to shape or remove any diseased or dead fronds.

Looking good!

I was concerned with the appearance of my plants when they arrived as they looked quite wilted, but once in the ground, they recovered and are doing well. Looking forward to seeing them grow and fill out!
