Product Description

A Small Yard Tree with Giant Blooms

* Award winning blooms!
* Disease resistant
* Adaptable to various soil types

The new Tonto Crape Myrtle gives you huge blooms, ranging in color from dark fuchsia to red throughout the summer. This is the perfect tree if you want to add vibrant color to your lawn, but have limited yard space.

Your crape myrtle matures to 8-15 ft., making it the perfect tree to tuck away in tight areas. However, it will soon attract attention with its abundance of fuchsia flowers that last from late spring to early fall.

Developed in the National Arboretum in 1990, the Tonto Crape Myrtle was bred to give you an explosion of color without the hassle of a large tree.

Winner of the:

- Georgia Gold Medal (1996)
- Mississippi Medallion (1999)

It is perhaps the most resistant crape myrtle to flower spotting. Your Tonto will keep its deep green foliage until autumn, when it will turn a dark maroon. Your crape myrtle will be one of the last trees in your lawn to lose its leaves in the fall.

Your new tree has a well-developed root structure that will support rapid growth. We have pruned your Crape Myrtle back so that it will grow stronger roots as well as give you a full, beautiful form that encourages the most blooms possible.

These trees are easy to transplant. They are very hardy and adaptable, meaning your tree will begin thriving in your lawn very soon. Ideal for Growing Zones 7-10.

I recommend this product

so far so good

I planted in the heat of the summer in dry Central Texas and that is a big no according to the area Green Thumb know it all's. Well I have kept all the trees and plants I purchased damp with daily watering and there doing extremely well. I'm sure it has allot to do with the high quality product you offer as I have done the same thing with other suppliers and lost but these ones are great. Thank You TIM MILLER

Instant love ❤️

These trees are amazing. We were amazed at how many blooms each are producing. We are, also, extremely pleased with the service level of Fast Growing Trees. We had a mix up on one of our shipments ( got wrong tree.) The response to correct was immediate...a winning combination...great product and great service! We would highly recommend this company! Try will not be disappointed!

Growing Fast

I planted this tree on June 28 with 3 feet tall and now it's flowering just with 4 feet tall after 90 days. The flower color on the picture seems dark red, but it really looks like purple red. The Root Rocket Fertilizer and Organic Planting Mix worked very well. Easy to plant and just remember to water every day. Also I can see some ants and flies on the leaves, however, it doesn't affect its growing.

Planting & Care

The Tonto Crape Myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica 'Tonto') is a drought-resistant, easy to grow tree that does well in growing zones 7-10 and is hardy down to 10 degrees. They perform best when given full sunlight (6-8 hours a day) and love heat. In the summer, this tree will give you explosive blooms ranging from red to dark fuchsia in color. The foliage stays green from Spring through Summer and in Fall will turn a dark maroon. This variety of crape myrtle reaches an average height of 8-15 feet.

Location: Select a site to plant your Tonto Crape Myrtle where it will receive 6-8 hours of direct sunlight and the soil drains well. They grow best in a variety of soils with a 5.0-6.5 pH range.

Planting Instructions:
1) Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep. Amend the soil around the hole with compost to ensure the tree has proper drainage.
2) Place the Tonto Crape Myrtle into the hole ensuring it is standing straight. The crown must be level with the surface. Crape Myrtles need their root crown (where the root ball meets the trunk) to be level with the top of the soil so it can pull oxygen into the root system. Start back filling the hole and watering as you go to eliminate any air pockets from forming.
3) Once the hole has been completely filled with soil, lightly pack the soil down.
4) Apply a layer of mulch around your tree to help retain moisture and keep away grass and weeds. Mulch will also help maintain temperature in the roots during winter. Be sure to keep the mulch 2-3 inches away from the trunk of your tree so fungus and rot don’t set in.

Watering: Give your newly planted tree deep waterings 1-3 times a week during the first growing season. Once your tree is established, it will only need occasional watering as they are naturally drought-resistant. Be sure to water the tree at the base instead of “showering” it as this can also promote the fungus.

Fertilization: Feed your tree in the Spring before growth begins. They do not need much fertilizer, so a light application of 5-10-5 fertilizer will do. Take care not to use anything too high in nitrogen. It builds healthy limb and foliage growth but can inhibit blooms from reaching their full potential.

Pruning: Watch for any suckers emerging from the base of the tree and remove promptly. To promote good air circulation, thin out young trees to 3-4 main branches and remove any dead or twiggy branches. When pruning your tree, make 45-degree angle cuts where the branches intersect the main stem. Pruning should ONLY be done in dormancy, preferably just before the spring season has begun.

Pests: The Tonto Crape Myrtle is pretty disease resistant but can produce powdery mildew if your climate is prone to high humidity and lack of rain. It’s important to keep your tree pruned to provide good air circulation to help prevent this. A good fungicide or a horticultural oil will be effective in preventing and controlling powdery mildew.
