Almost 3 Years

Bought this guy in Oct 2021. Picture taken June 2024. Nothing more than water and full sun. Fertilizer is whatever it gets from my lawn fertilizer I put down twice a year. Leaves are so full this Spring, I'm probably going to have to stake the trunk for more support.

1 year later

Lookin good a year later. I live in its native range so I don't baby it. Mine didn't get flowers this year nor did it leaf out right away. I was getting worried but if you google "Why hasn't my tree leafed out yet?" You'll get an answer to the effect of "if your tree hasn't leafed out by mid spring it's probably goner with one exception...the Eastern Redbud. " Just be patient and you'll be rewarded with awesome foliage.

I give it a five

I give it a five star because the tree is truly beautiful. However, my Flame Thrower Redbud did not survive the winter. I am in zone 5B so it should have survived. Maybe this should be only rated to zone 6. TY

Gorgeous! Don't give up if it goes dormant!

I bought my flame thrower Red bud in August so it has been in the ground for about 8 months. When I first got it it had only a few leaves which were quickly carried away and are very windy Central Florida beach conditions. All winter it was nothing more than a stick and I was sure it died because when I scraped the bark it was very brown and maybe of the tiny branches would just crack when touched. I waited until about April when I decided to give it some espoma tree fertilizer and trim back a couple of inches on each remaining branch to see if I could promote growth. After only a week I started to notice the tiniest flush of leaves coming out all along the branches! Now it looks absolutely stunning. After only a couple of weeks, the leaves are already changing colors. I live in Central Florida zone 9B near the beach so it's very windy. There are days when I'm not sure this little tree is going to be able to hold on to its leaves, but so far it's been very strong. I decided to use a little bit of bonsai wire to strengthen the tiny little branches, which seems to hold in place a little better. I'm hoping as it grows it will become stronger. I can't wait to see how it looks next spring, hoping for some flowers!
