GMOs and Hybrids: The Differences, Benefits and Our Plants

As a small part of a global discussion, we want to set the record straight about what we do at Hybrid plants, GMOs and ethical sustainability are all very hot topics that can be confusing, and thus all the more deserving of a clear and accurate explanation.

The last several decades have been unlike anything we’ve seen as it relates to farming methods. Global food demand has influenced large-scale food-growing techniques, sparking much debate around the resulting impact on our planet and our health. It’s tempting to cast blanket labels, like that locally-grown food is good and everything else is bad. The reality of the situation is far more granular and deserves a closer look.

Hybrids Aren’t GMOs

Let’s first establish the fact that hybrid plants and genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, are not the same thing. In fact, while genetic engineering is a relatively new phenomenon, nature has been creating hybridized plants for thousands of years. And these hybrid plants are fully compliant with certified organic growing standards.

The process of making a hybrid plant is actually much simpler than you may think.

Hybridization occurs when insects carry pollen from one variety of plant to the female flower of another variety in the same genus. The result is a hybrid with traits from both plants.

Our process at is taken directly from nature’s process, with a few important exceptions. Our hybrid plants are cross-pollinated in a controlled, sterile environment, ensuring our plants are disease-free.

Furthermore, while cross-pollination from insects is random, we are able to ensure plant varieties are matched with favorable traits. For example, we may cross a mango tree characterized by a plentiful yield with a different mango tree that is naturally disease-resistant. Lastly, controlled cross-pollination ensures your food is not only optimally delicious, but is also disease-free and healthy to eat. Rather than try to outsmart nature’s process, we have taken her example and followed suit.

So, Are Our Plants GMOs?

There are two ways to acquire genetically modified, or genetically engineered organisms:

Scenario 1. Take a shovel, find a GMO-authorized grower, uproot some plants and make for the border before they catch you.

Scenario 2. Endure the rigorous legal obligations and fees required of mass food-producing farmers wanting to use GMO seeds.

Since neither scenario appeals to us at, you can trust that any food-baring plant you buy is ethically-grown, naturally harvested and completely safe for consumption.
