Tree under stress?
I liked the shape of the tree when it arrived. It's been planted as directed. For the first couple weeks the edges of the leaves started to dry out. I was not overly concerned as I thought it had a little stress from transplanting. It was planted using potting soil that was supposed to feed it for 6-9 months so I did not use any fertilizer. It's had water but now the edges of most all the leaves are drying out. Don't want to over water it but don't want to under water as well. Any suggestions?

Needs Some Shade
Tree arrived in great condition but was struggling immediately. We are in new construction with not a lot of mature trees. Local landscapers working in the area advised that this tree does better with more shade. It is currently in a large pot on our porch and is doing better. We are hopeful we will be able to plant it on the property at a later date.

Nice, but small
Here is the Red Japanese Maple I received. It was a little smaller than I expected, but seems to be doing well. I can't tell if it has grown. I should have marked the stick that came attached to the tree. It has developed a couple of new, very small leaves. It is mostly in the shade during the day, getting about 3 hours of sun each day.
Small, but green.

It doesn't look like this little twig is going to make it. We appreciated the replacement tree, but it is so small, and the leaves are already starting to turn brown and fall off.

So far so good. New growth quickly. We'll see how it does. Did not receive the root starter that was to come with the order so planted it without.

I love Japanese Maples! If I had to do it over I would’ve purchased the $175 red Japanese maple at Home Depot that was 4’ wide and 4’ high and was so lush you couldn’t see through it. Instead, I paid $99 for a 5’ stick with 3 branches that had serious rub damage and leaves with significant pest damage. As stated in previous reviews I’ve written, all 3 trees I’ve purchased from this company has had pest damage and it’s due to the mild SC winter we had which is fine - but I don’t think they should charge as much for those trees.

I’ve managed to get this maple to produce new growth but it’s been a battle. I also bought several bushes from fast growing trees and they were all perfect and have significant growth in the month 8ve had them.
The branch was ripped at the seam but it has new growth so....
It’s been a battle but she’s producing new growth.

Planting & Care

It's Easy to Plant & Care for Your Red Japanese Maple Tree

Red Japanese Maple Tree Planting Diretions

The Red Japanese Maple is a beautifully decorative, cold hardy tree that has been known to add serious value to properties. These Japanese maples are commonly used as focal points or centerpieces for landscapes and appreciated for their non-invasive root structure. This moderately growing, full to partial sun lover is also fantastic for small to medium spaces as they only mature to about 15 feet tall and anywhere from 15-25 feet wide but can be easily controlled through pruning practices. The beautiful scarlet foliage of the Red Japanese Maple is prized as it lasts most of the year instead just a few weeks.

Planting Directions:
1) The hole should be dug slightly larger than the root system of the plant, 2-3 times the width and just as deep as the root ball.
2) To help the roots establish themselves quickly, mix the soil with an organic compost (conifer bark mulch, rhododendron or azalea planting mix or rose compost) that is recommended but not necessarily needed.
3) The root collar of the plant, the ground line on the stem where the young plant was grown, should be level with the ground surface.
4) Back fill the hole and tamp down the soil as you proceed to cut back on any air pockets from forming.
5) Water the planting site and then mulch to preserve soil moisture.

Exception: If you have clay soil, dig your hole rather shallow, so that the root system is partly above the ground. When filling the hole, the soil should be mounded up to the root collar to protect the tree from drying out. (If deep holes are dug in heavy soils such as clay, the hole acts like a large iron kettle with no drainage, causing the water to build up, drowning and killing your tree.)

Mulching: Mulching around your Japanese maple helps to maintain a weed free area, minimizes water loss in dry conditions, and provides winter protection for the roots during cold frosts. The ideal mulch bed is a 2 inch layer of coarse bark.

Watering: The average amount of water supplied to most common lawn and garden plants should be adequate for your new Japanese maple tree. During the hot summer months, water your Japanese maple in early morning or evening. This will help protect against a condition known as “scorching” where the leaves appear to have been burnt by the sun, a condition thought to be brought on by watering in the midday sun.

Fertilization: Japanese maples do not require large amounts of nutrients. If your other lawn and garden plants do well, your maple should grow just fine. Any recommended fertilization should use a balanced complete fertilizer for shrubs and trees. This should be applied once a year in early spring, and if possible be applied just before the leaves appear.

Pruning: Your tree will need 2 to 3 years to become firmly established in your lawn or garden. After this period, you may begin to prune your tree if desired, although it is not required.

Do the roots of Japanese maple grow straight down or out from the trunk?
James J on May 28, 2018
BEST ANSWER: What I love about this tree is that trunk do not get big the roots grow straight down it grows the max 15 ft. And you can make it as a bonsai if you want.
How soon should my tree be planted once it is shipped to my home?
