Wildfire black gum. What a beauty!
It can in at the perfect time! Rains came the following 2 days along with cooler weather. Beautiful tree! Looking forward to many happy years under the shade.
Well-established and growing beautifully!
Here’s an update a year and a half after planting. We ordered our Wildfire in April 2024. Left it staked for much too long, and by the time we realized that, it was top-heavy - lots of foliage and branches on a too-slender, not-strong-enough trunk, evidenced by it bent almost to the ground after a storm. We scrambled to adjust and ended up with a tall cage around it and ties holding the cage steady against the winds that primarily come from one direction. This way, it could still move around with the wind, but not topple over. After several months like that, it seems to have strengthened, and now is almost straight and holding its own. It came as a 5-6 foot tree and is now 9-10 feet. All its new foliage came out warm red, and now its fall foliage is just beginning with some bright red leaves popping out. It’s done so well here (and we’ve learned stuff), so we’re about to order another one to replace a tree that had to go!
Stury little trees
Arrival - This order was shipped expertly. The box was in excellent condition. Both trees were impressive, and the best looking of my 4-tree order. Day 1 - Planted well. Already sturdy but still left stake in for 3 months. Like all the trees in my order, no leader. They were cut for shipping or pruning. Hoping this is common, and young trees figure that stuff out later. First 3 months - One tree is not growing. It's not dying, it's not even dropping leaves - but it's not making any new growth. I'm in a "wait and see" as maybe it will pop out of it with a new spring next year? Again, even it the pictures it "looks fine" - but in person you can see a lack of fresh leaves and a more pale color than the other Black Gum (which is doing great). 4. 4 Months - Stake removed, no supports! Both of trees are self-supporting. Other than my concern on growth and no leaders, they seem to be doing well.
