Note: Banana leaves are huge and can sometimes get crinkled in shipping. Simply remove any damaged or worn leaves to stimulate the growth of new leaves. Use them to wrap meat for your next barbecue. During the growing season you will see fresh new leaves appear every few days.

1. Planting: Ice Cream Bananas can tolerate partial shade, but need at least six hours of sunlight a day. Banana Trees don’t like extreme heat, so afternoon shade will be more beneficial for your tree than morning shade. Avoid areas that receive high winds. If you keep it indoors, place your banana tree by a large sunny window.

Once you’ve scouted your planting location, dig a hole that’s twice as wide as the pot and just as deep. Place your tree in the hole, and make sure that it’s level with the surrounding ground and that it’s standing straight up. Gently back fill the hole, tamping down to prevent air pockets and give your tree a long, slow drink of water. Finally, mulch the planting site to conserve water moisture and keep grass and weeds away from the tree.

Note: This product grows best in well-draining soil. When you receive your plant, you may notice small, white beads or rocks in the soil - this medium is added to increase drainage and keep your plant happy and healthy!

2. Watering: Keep your soil moist, but not oversaturated. Water your tree every 2 to 3 days during the summer, and every few weeks in the winter, depending on your climate. Warmer areas that are more prone to drought will require water more frequently. If your tree is in a shady area, it will most likely require less water.

But if you're not sure when to water your tree, simply check the soil about 2 inches down - if the soil is dry here, it's time to water.

3. Fertilizing: Give your tree a well-balanced organic fertilizer once a month during the growing season. Fertilizer will have a recommended dose for the size of your tree on the back of the package. We recommend giving your tree half of that dose for best results.

4. Pruning: Remove any damaged or broken leaves that hang downwards. After your tree produces fruit, trim it back to about 30 inches tall, and let the stem dry out for a week or two. Once the stem has dried, remove it. This will allow new banana tree stalks to grow.

Going Bananas

I bought the 3 to 4-foot version of this ice cream banana plant on November 23, 2023. I planted it in an 18-gallon pot (21. 46 outside diameter / 20. 67 inside diameter X 16. 77H) (2. 41 cubic feet) (73. 72 quarts / 69. 77 liters) that I found at Lowe's. I started off with Miracle-Gro soil, I believe, but then I decided to switch it out to a more premium soil by Fox Farm called Strawberry Fields. I would keep the banana outdoors the entire year except for winter. During the winter, I would move the banana plant into the garage and use grow lights to keep it vibrant and happy. The banana outgrew its original pot, so right before overwintering it at the end of 2024, I up-potted it to a 25-gallon nursery pot. When I finally took it out before spring (Feb 2025), it had outgrown my garage ceiling, so I decided that I had to plant it in the ground. After I transplanted it in the ground, it did not put out any new growth for a few weeks. Eventually, it started putting out new leaves regularly. It put out a few large leaves. Then it put out like 3 short leaves, and then Boom!!! A beautiful flower appeared, and bananas started forming. So from the time I got the banana plant, it took about 1-1/2 years (or 18 months) for the flower and bananas to appear. Bananas are heavy feeders, so I used Banana Fuel by Wellspring Gardens. Since it is easy to overwater potted plants, to give myself another advantage, I used Sustee Aquameter moisture sensor sticks. These sticks turn blue when the plant has enough water, but they turn white when the soil is too dry. Ice cream bananas are small bananas. When they develop, the top of the stem where the banana is attached kinda looks like a knuckle. The bananas that my plant is producing have all these features, so it is a true Ice Cream Banana plant, not a Namwah, which looks very similar. I have been very pleased with this banana plant, and I can't wait to see what it does in the future.

Sweet little tree

I ordered 2 of these with several other plants. 1 Ice cream Bannana tree was damaged during shipping and it didnt make it. But the other has already doubled in size despite being damage as well.
