Product Description

Five-Star Hedge Performer

The Hicksii Yew -- commonly shortened to Hicks Yew -- fulfills multiple uses in the garden, its narrow, columnar shape gets high marks as a hedge, screen or foundation planting. Grouped together, they form a dense, evergreen barrier for use as privacy screens or wind protection. Adorned with a fine texture of needles, the Hicks Yew can also serve as a lush backdrop for other garden plants.

Keep in mind, this upright yew variety doesn’t always have to fulfill practical duties in your yard. Its multi-stemmed structure can be pruned into a vertical accent or ornamental topiary as well.

Delivers on Year-Round Color
No matter where it’s planted, the Hicksii Yew is a lively, green focal point all year. It’s technically a conifer with flat needles and fern-like branches. New spring shoots emerge vibrant green, darkening to a richer shade as they mature.

In the fall, the female produces vivid, red berries that present a stunning display of color and contrast when other plantings have yielded to freezing temperatures.

Solves the Shade Dilemma
For those challenging areas of your yard that never seem to get enough sun, few evergreens are as successful as the Hicksii Yew. Although it matures best in well-draining soil and partial to full sun, many owners appreciate its tolerance to shade. You’ll find it doesn’t grow as quickly as those planted in sunny spaces, but a good pruning can maintain a uniform look between shrubs.

Easy-Going Garden Staple
This popular hybrid of the English and Japanese varieties requires little upkeep. Low-maintenance and equipped with its own natural defenses against disease and insects, you can expect this shrub to be a prominent feature in your garden for decades.

Pruning is up to you. It can handle a heavy shearing or be left to grow naturally. If you prefer a more orderly appearance, early spring before new shoots develop is an ideal time to trim.

It’s considered a slow grower, but in fact, it’s one of the faster maturing of the yew species. It performs best in cooler climates, USDA zones 4-7, with some sensitivity to extreme temperature changes. The needles may turn brown from exposure but will rebound nicely over the next growing season.

Fits Right in to City Living
A durable evergreen, the Hicksii Yew, thrives in city environments; even those with higher levels of pollution. Its upright, compact shape lends well to urban settings and small garden spaces. Top that off with its slower growing habit and tolerance for pruning, and you have a shrub that provides plenty of privacy with space to spare.

With several different types of yew shrubs available, you can feel confident with the proven performance of the Hicksii Yew. Its versatility, vibrant color and ease of maintenance truly set it apart. Your Hicksii Yew are ready and waiting. Get your order in today!

Excited to see such perfect bushes arive!

The yews were perfectly trimmed and arrived extremely healthy from good care and excellent packaging. They were much better than I expected. The small 1 gallon plants were perfect for my needs to infill an existing old hedge without destroying the roots of adjacent plants. Young plants always adapt to their surroundings best for the long term but take patience. If I were planting these alone I would have chosen the 2 gallon for the best balance of a little more size but still a well adapted young plant. I will definitely buy more plants next spring!

Great healthy happy hicksii yews (*^-^]

These are doing great. I received very healthy yews and they already have new growth on them since being planted. They were packed so well too and arrived in perfect condition. Thanks so very much (*^-^)

Skinny Hikksii Yew Starter Plants

I was very impressed by the timeliness of the order and the care you take to protect the plants. Mine are little starters課_ so I hope the will one day look like this photo. But they seem to be happy in their new home.

Planting & Care

Location: The Taxus x media ‘Hicksii, commonly called the “Hicksii yew,” is a favorite hedge shrub or singular evergreen shrub specimen for the garden. It grows best in USDA plant hardiness zones 4 to 7. The conifer shrub can grow 8-12 feet in height and approximately four feet wide, so if planting a hedge space the plants six to eight feet apart. Plant the Hicksii yew in the spring or summer so it has adequate time to develop a strong root system before winter.

Planting Instructions: The Hicksii yew grows best well in a wide range of soil types that have a neutral pH balance. Pick a planting location that is well-draining because the shrub does not tolerate an overly wet root system.

Choose a planting site in full sunlight or partial shade. The Hicksii yew will survive in a shady garden location, but its growth might be stunted.

Dig a hole that is twice the size of the shrub’s root ball. Place the shrub into the hole and gently spread out its roots. Make sure the root crown is level with the soil surface so the roots can pull oxygen in. Mix ample organic material into the soil and pack it around the roots so no air pockets remain.

Spread a three-inch layer of mulch such as pine needles, bark chips, recycled plastic chunks, or peat moss around the base of the shrub to keep the soil moist and slow weed growth.

Container Growth: The Hicksii yew is a favorite shrub to grow as a column in a planter on either side of a doorway or gate.  Pick a pot that measures at least twice the size of the shrub’s root ball. The container should have drainage holes in the bottom to allow water to freely flow away from the shrub’s root system. Remember to frequently check to soil in the pot to keep it from drying out. A shrub grown in a container dries out quicker than a shrub grown in the ground.

Watering: Water the Hicksii yew shrub at least once a week. The conifer shrub is not drought tolerant and will start to drop its evergreen needles if it does not receive adequate water. Keep the soil around the Hicksii yew moist but not overly wet for best growth.

Fertilizer: Fertilizing a young yew shrub will help encourage the shrub to develop a strong root system. Apply a water-soluble 10-10-10 plant fertilizer formula in the spring, once a month to feed the Hicksii yew. Sprinkle it at least four inches from the shrub’s trunk to avoid root burn. Follow the instructions on the fertilizer’s label for application ratios.  Water the shrub thoroughly after applying the fertilizer.

Pruning: Prune the Hicksii yew during the late winter months when the shrub is dormant and “hardened off.” Avoid removing more than one-third of the shrub’s limbs when pruning. Lightly shearing the shrub will encourage it to grow denser.

Pests and Diseases: The Hicksii yew is exceptionally disease and pest resistant.
