Product Description

A Thick Ornamental Tree Foundation Hedge or Privacy Fence with a Festive Flair

This is a versatile Holly that grows large naturally and takes well to pruning.

As a seasonal bonus you also get bright red berries to cheer up your winter and put you in a holiday mood.

Deep, green leaves offer sharp contrast to the multitudes of bright red berries, making them pop with wonderfully noticeable color.

Easy to grow and shade tolerant, this large, rounded shrub plays a role in every season, including spring. That's when birds will drop in to your garden to feast on the juicy berries. And the Red Holly holds up well indoors too.

Place cuttings in decorative bowls or vases throughout your home and you'll be amazed at how long they last. Red Holly adapts to clay and sandy soils and is a trouble-free plant.

Planting & Care

Robin Red Holly is known for its glossy foliage and red colorful berries in winter. This variety known as (llex x Rohin Conin) are fast growers and low-maintenance. They can grow in full or partial sun but prefer partial shade. Rohin Red Holly perform their best in USDA growing zones 6-9, mature to a height of 10-12 feet and width of 6-8 feet.

Location: When planting Robin Red Holly, find a site that offers some shade, even though they can tolerate full sun.

Planting Instructions: Select a site with moist, well draining soil for your Robin Red Holly.
1) Dig the hole a little shallower than the root ball and 3 times the width of the root ball.
2) Loosen the soil in and around the hole so the roots can easily break through.
3) Use your fingers to separate the roots of your Robin Red Holly and gently position downward in the hole. Position to where the trunk begins and the roots end, about an inch above the soil level.
4) Backfill the hole, apply water to settle the soil and remove the air pockets.
5) Mulching around the holly can be beneficial in retaining soil moisture while also keeping competitive growth such as grass and weeds at bay.

Mulching: Protect the roots in winter against the chill by applying a thick layer of pine needles, bark or wood. Keep the mulch about 2 inches from the trunk as fungus/rot can settle in if the mulch is making contact with the holly. The mulch will also help with keeping the soil moist.

Watering: Water Robin Red Holly as needed to keep the soil lightly moist. However, don’t allow the soil to get over saturated, as soggy soil can cause root rot. Mulching will be beneficial in helping retain soil moisture and keeping competing growth away from the tree.

Fertilizing: Holly generally doesn’t require any supplemental fertilization. However, if the soil or growth is poor, feed the plant in spring and fall using a fertilizer specifically formulated for evergreen and other acid loving plants.

Pruning: Pruning is only required if you wish to keep the holly at a certain shape or size. Shape your holly in late winter or early spring before growth resumes. Pruning is not absolutely necessary for the holly to maintain good health.
