Blue Blooms + Dense Foliage

Why Big Blue Liriope Plants?

Grassy evergreen foliage merges with bold blue-purple blooms, making the Big Blue Liriope an eye-catching favorite. The flowers mark the end of summer, lasting until fall then giving way to shiny black berries in the winter.

It's perfect for edging along a flower garden or mixed border...especially since it can be used as a groundcover to prevent erosion. Big Blue is a landscape problem solver because it thrives through tough conditions, including dry or shady areas.

Deer deterrent

I planted liriope last summer as a ground cover on a bank. It has weathered well. I purchased more in the fall but it didn't arrive until December so it has spent the winter in my greenhouse. I live in western PA surrounded by woods so deer are an issue. I have another solution that was passed on to me by Penn State extension. Surround your area to protect with clear fishing line at a height that the deer will touch when they bend down to feast. They feel something touching them and are spooked away. I protected my rose garden all last summer! I am in the process of looking for poles that are "clear" so I don't even see them. I've also used Deer Guard ultra sonic units. It works much better than the cheaper brands but is runs about $50.

Fast Growing Trees Plant ExpertHi Rosemarie! Thank you for your review and for sharing such helpful advice! We’re glad your plants are doing well, and your approach to deterring deer is a great tip for the community.

Oh, My DEER!!!

I must post this addendum to my original post (see below). __________ My Liriope plants, which arrived looking gorgeous, are still doing fine. But there's a problem. These aren't resistant to deer, at least not to Connecticut shoreline deer! Three of my eight plants were eaten quite a bit but, thankfully, not down to the dirt. __________ I've purchased ultrasonic repellent gizmos with LED flashing lights. So far, so good. But the cold winter months, when deer can get mighty hungry, will be the ultimate test. __________ The deer seem to eat just about anything!! I hope these plants can recuperate. But can they survive the deer's voracious appetite? If not, I don't know what I'll ever be able to plant in my lamppost planter that I haven't already tried!

Fast Growing Trees Plant ExpertHi John, thank you for sharing your update. We’re glad your Liriope plants are still doing well, though we’re sorry to hear the deer have discovered them. Even plants often labeled as deer resistant can sometimes fall victim to especially hungry deer. It sounds like you’re taking great precautions, and we’re here anytime if you’d like tips on helping them recover.

Impressive, but NOT Deer Resistant!

Plants arrived in excellent condition. Very healthy. But within 48 hours, deer cropped them down to 2 inch stubs. The deer seemed to prefer these over other available greenery nearby, as if they are Deer Candy rather than being deer-resistant. Not a total loss, I am sure these will grow back. . . once relocated to a protected place.

Fast Growing Trees Plant ExpertHi Sherry, thanks so much for sharing your experience. We're really sorry to hear that deer found your liriope so quickly. It can definitely be frustrating when a “deer-resistant” plant ends up being their favorite snack. Even these plants aren’t always safe when deer are extra hungry. A fence or some added protection can help a lot. If you’d like tips on keeping them safe or suggestions for alternatives, we’re always here to help!
