Nice tree arrived on time
Tree looked good when it arrived healthy with nice foliage. Putting it in the ground soon but so far so good!
The cedars died because these dried out in shipment.
The cedars did not make it. I think the problem was the shipping through the post office. By the time I received them the trees were dried out. One has a little green on it still and may survive.
Tree was only about a foot tall and is now about 50-60% brown. One I bought locally cheaper is about 3 Ft and all green
Healthy trees and excellent customer service
The trees arrived healthy although the top of one broke during shipment. I called the customer service line to report the damage and they immediately shipped a new one. I was very impressed with the quality of the trees and the excellent customer service.
Tree was dormant upon arrival but has greened up nicely & is doing well. It was 3-4 ft. high as described & was in good condition. Very pleased with it.
Planting & Care
Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana) is a very hardy tree that can grow in almost any type of soil and climate. They’re best suited for USDA growing zones 4-9 and can tolerate heat waves, droughts, snow and extreme cold. Slowly growing to an overall height of 30-60 feet tall and 15-20 feet wide, these trees will stay smaller in poor soils. Eastern Red Cedars make a great privacy screen trees while providing food and shelter for wildlife in the winter months.
Location: Cedar trees are full sun trees that require at least 8 hours of sun, they will not reach their full height in partial sun. These trees get up to 20 feet wide so be certain to allow them room to grow unless you’re using them as a privacy screen which can be spaced 6-8 feet apart. They’re tolerant of a wide range of soil types from clay to sandy to rocky. It prefers moist soil but does not like to be wet for extended periods of time. They can also tolerate dry conditions.
*Tip: These trees should not be planted near apple trees, as cedar apple rust can over winter on cedar trees.
Planting Directions: Once you have chosen your location it is time to plant.
1) Dig a hole that is twice as big around as the container, and just as deep. Planting these trees too deeply will cause them to struggle to adapt.
2) Remove your tree from the container and gently comb the roots to loosen the roots.
3) Place the tree in the hole ensuring that the root ball is level.
4) Back fill the hole with a mixture of native soil and compost (use 60% native soil and 40% compost or garden soil). Water lightly every few inches to remove air pockets and water well when done.
5) Cover the area with mulch to help protect the roots as well as keeping grass and weeds out of the planting area.
Watering: Eastern Red Cedar can tolerate moist soil, but do like to dry out some while establishing. Water when the soil is dry about 2 inches down, the timing will vary depending on climate and conditions.
Pruning: Eastern red cedars need little if any pruning. You can prune to maintain size and shape, but regular pruning is not required.
Fertilizing: Eastern red cedars do not need regular fertilization. You can fertilize the first spring to give them a boost, an evergreen specific fertilizer such as Holly Tone is perfect.
