Fall Plants: Top 5 Preview of the Season
Our countdown to fall has started, and there’s only a few weeks left before the fresh, crisp vibes of the season are upon us.But this time is about more than pumpkin spice and cozy sweaters. Since we’re approaching autumn quickly, we’ve decided to highlight some of our favorite fall plants.
We’ve discussed fall planting and landscaping, but how about some of our seasonal staples? Check out our picks for top 5 fall plants and see why they’re the best for the months (and following seasons) to come.
1. Tulip Poplar Tree
It’s one of the quintessential fall plants, especially because it provides rich visual interest for months. Spring blooms transform, becoming vibrant green leaves in the summer and golden yellow foliage during fall.
And best of all, it’s super easy to maintain. The Tulip Poplar is highly resistant to diseases and pests, so it’s a healthful pick that lasts a lifetime.
Tulip-like florals with fresh fragrance in the spring and dazzling, blazing hues in autumn? Check. The Tulip Poplar Tree truly has it all. Also, since it’s hardy down to -20 degrees, it grows nearly anywhere in the country.
2. Chicago Cold Hardy Fig Tree
What’s a list of fall plants without a fig? We love all of our fig trees, but the Chicago Cold Hardy Fig Tree is in a league of its own.
Basically, no matter how cold it gets, the Chicago Cold Hardy Fig keeps on chugging. It can literally freeze during the winter and still come back strong the following spring with bounties of delicious figs. It’s hardy down to -10 degrees, so you can get figgy with it (we had to) all over the country.
And though it can achieve a mature height of 30 feet, this tree can be trimmed to your desired size (even as short as 6 feet).
3. American Red Maple Tree
The iconic tree when it comes to fall plants:The American Red Maple. It’s aptly named, famous for its rich, vivid fall foliage during the season.
Even better? It adapts to any environment and is one of the most populous trees in the East because of its versatility. For one, it’s drought tolerant but will grow in wet, boggy areas, especially in the Southern portion of its range. And it grows in nearly any soil type.
Plus, it tolerates the pollution that comes with planting in an urban environment (though the colors of its leaves may be less brilliant).
The American Red Maple Tree is perfect for planting during fall as well, though it may take a couple of years to see the deepest red hues and full potential of your tree. Luckily, it’s a fast grower with variable beauty from season to season.
4. Chinese Pistache Tree
We just can’t get enough of that classic autumnal color, especially from our favorite fall plants. And the Chinese Pistache Tree delivers.
Multiple shades of red, orange and yellow brighten the landscape when the equinox arrives, making a vivid statement in yards and along neighborhood streets.
Even better, if you’re looking for a more exotic look, the Chinese Pistache fits the bill. Long, slender leaves that are one-of-a-kind set this tree apart. And did we mention ease? These trees are hassle-free and grow to a mature height of 25 to 35 feet, meaning that they’re large enough to leave an impression but aren’t overpowering.
