Planting & Care

It's Easy to Plant & Care for Your White Oak Tree

White Oak Tree Planting Diretions

Planting Instructions: Plant your White Oak in a spot in your yard that receives at least 4 hours of direct sunlight each day. Pick a spot that will give this tree plenty of room to grow. You'll want to give this tree at least 50' of space. The more open the space, the wider this tree will grow. The White Oak prefers acidic soil that has abundant amounts of natural fungi. If you live in poor soil or urban soil conditions, be sure to add a significant amount of compost or manure to your soil. After you plant the tree, tamp down the soil until it is firm. Thoroughly water the base of the tree, so that water penetrates the roots. Spread a good amount of mulch around the base of the tree to retain moisture. You may want to cage in your tree at the beginning of its life as deer and rabbit will eat the young stalks of the tree.

Watering: Water the tree to keep the ground moist. Watering deeply, once a week, should be enough to help your young tree establish roots. Once your tree matures, you only need to water in the dry seasons where you get less than 1 inch per month. Keep in mind, the tree can take up to 50 years to reach full maturity

Maintenance: The White Oak is very easy to care for and is very resistant to many problems that common urban trees have. Fertilizing once a year and occasional pruning to thin overcrowded branches is not necessary for your White Oak to thrive, but may be beneficial to ensure larger growth. You will likely see insects on your tree throughout its life, but they are not harmful. The White Oak is susceptible to some diseases, but pruning any diseased branches as it grows will prevent the tree's mortality. An occasional watchful eye and consistent moisture levels is all this tree needs to survive its youth and mature.
