Summer-Long Blooms with Exotic Fragrance
The El Nino® Chitalpa Desert Orchid is a rare hybrid with show-stopping appeal. Bred from the desert willow and catalpa, this unique plant delivers the best of both worlds—tropical-looking, orchid-like flowers and long-lasting durability. Its compact form makes it perfect for smaller landscapes, and the blooms smell like a sweet mix of vanilla and ripe melon.
Unlike traditional flowering shrubs, El Nino® puts on a show all summer long, blooming on new wood for reliable color year after year. Intricate pink-purple flowers emerge in late spring and continue to pop up throughout the season. It’s also drought-tolerant, disease-resistant, and thrives in both dry and moist conditions.
Its sweet fragrance attracts butterflies and hummingbirds, bringing life to your garden, patio, or landscape border. Despite its delicate look, this plant is low-maintenance, deer-resistant, and built to withstand heat and harsh conditions.
Compact, fragrant, and visually unforgettable, El Nino® Chitalpa Desert Orchid is as rare as it is rewarding. If you're looking to add a true conversation piece to your garden that also happens to be easy to care for, then grab your El Nino® Chitalpa Desert Orchid today!

Small and pale (leaves) but doing well.
The plants were small enough that I have decided to grow them in pots for a season to get them large enough to detect while mowing before putting them in the ground. Leaves were pale - nearly white - on arrival and may have emerged on the road. As soon as I put them out in the sun they greened up and being joined by new leaves every day.
Experiment
This plant was zoned 6-9 I believe but I’m in SW FL zone 10A on a barrier island. I seen this plant on garden answer and wondered if it could make it here so I purchased one tiny little plant. It grew last year didn’t flower then lost all its leaves and I thought well either it went dormant or it died lol. So I checked and to my surprise it is green and it just sprouted new leaves on every branch. I never cut it back though I wonder if I should have. I’m gonna play it out and see what she does this season! I’m sooooo excited!
My Nino desert chitalpa tree
It arrived in great condition packaged very carefully. I expect it will come back to life in the Spring since I am in zone 6. I can’t wait to see the buds start to swell.
Chitalpa Desert Orchid
I don't know about the plants yet since they are dormant. I'm hoping they will be good. Ask me again about April.
