Product Description

The Magnolia Tree for Smaller Spaces

Same Qualities as a Southern Magnolia - Just Smaller
There is so much to love about the Magnolia Tree, and even more to appreciate about the Little Gem Magnolia Tree. It has the same wonderful attributes of the hardy Southern Magnolia Tree, yet tops out at around 20 feet tall (as opposed to 80 feet.) It's ideal for landscapes that can't accommodate the 40-foot width of a typical magnolia.  The Little Gem will mature around 8 - 10 feet wide. When planting space is limited, this magnolia is the perfect choice as its narrowly columned form takes up considerably less space than all other variations. There are numerous options of how to grow and enjoy this beautiful tree. It makes a striking ornamental and fills in corners and borders with ease.  Plant this beside your patio, or walkway to enjoy the sweet fragrance of the flowers all spring and summer. If space is extremely limited, you can grow it as a shrub or a bush.

Impressive White Flowers
Its ornate flowers--large (8 inches wide), white and creamy-- last longer than any of its cousins. The Little Gem Magnolia is an early bloomer and will spend half the year showing off its impressive flowers with a sweet, enchanting fragrance. Clip them and bring them inside to fill your home with its aroma and beauty.  These are the most popular flowers for bridal bouquets and a favorite with florists. The special combination of dark green foliage and light colored flowers is subtle, yet awe-inspiring.

Not Limited to Southern Region
This is a hardy tree that can handle various climates. It has a reputation for growing in the deep and humid south, but it will do well in Zones 7-9 and will actually exhibit growth during the cold season in some southern locations.  With little care of no more than adequate moisture and the occasional plant food, the tree will provide excellent screening, framing accents and other versatile uses limited only by the imagination.

LITTLE GEM

We have been looking at the little gem magnolia trees for about 4 months. I decided to get my wife a couple of them for Christmas this year only to find out that local nurseries said they couldn't get any until spring! That's when I found these online and decided to give them a try. Best decision I ever made! Will order more from you guys for sure.

Very good experience

Five starts. Looked good right out of the box. Size was as promised. Price was better than I found locally though I couldn't find the Little Gem late in the season so was glad to find it. They included the Root Rocket starter which I've used. After a few weeks it looks good. Looking forward to seeing how it does next spring. I would buy this tree again and would look to FGT again. Only snag was that FedEx scanned the delivery as having occurred when they hadn't delivered it (apparently a new FedEx "tactic.") FGT was terrific about following up and 24 hours later offered to send a new tree--just as FedEx finally decided to deliver the tree. Fingers crossed the extra day in a bitter cold box on a FedEx truck didn't set my tree back.

Planting & Care

Plant your Little Gem Magnolia in an area that receives full to partial sunlight. Although Little Gem Magnolias prefer full sun they can tolerate shade. For a privacy screen or hedge plant your Little Gem Magnolias about 5 feet apart. Make sure that your tree doesn't sit in an low area of your yard that collects standing water.

Little Gem Magnolias prefer slightly acidic soil but will adapt to your natural soil even if it's sandy or heavy in clay as long as it's well draining. After planting your Little Gem Magnolia water it once a week. Once your Magnolia is established it will be very drought tolerant and will only need water during times of drought.

Early every Spring fertilize your Little Gem Magnolia with a well balanced fertilizer like formula 10-10-10 or 8-8-8 and prepare for the show. White creamy flowers will emerge in the Spring and keep blooming all summer and into the Fall!
