Beauty Japanese Plum Tree

1. Planting: Plant your Beauty Plum in well-draining soil in full sun for best flowering and fruit production. In colder climates, plant away from low-lying areas and frost pockets to help protect early blossoms from frost damage. Dig a hole twice as wide and just as deep as the root ball. Place the tree in the hole, backfill with soil, and water thoroughly to settle the roots. Apply mulch around the base to conserve moisture, keeping it a few inches away from the trunk.

2. Watering: During the first growing season, water deeply every 2–3 days to establish strong roots. After establishment, water deeply once or twice per week during the growing season, adjusting for rainfall and climate conditions. Always water at the base and avoid overhead watering.

3. Fertilizing: In early spring, apply a balanced fertilizer or a fruit tree fertilizer higher in phosphorus and potassium to support blooming and fruit production. Follow package directions for application rates.

4. Pruning: Japanese plums are typically trained to a vase or open-center shape to encourage airflow and sunlight penetration. Because they produce fruit on one-year-old wood and spurs, regular dormant-season pruning helps maintain productivity. Thin immature fruit when they reach about dime-size, spacing fruits 4–5 inches apart to improve size and quality at harvest.
