The Impossible To Kill Groundcover Plant

Yucca ‘Color Guard’ or 'Adam's Needle' plants will flourish in dry, sandy or rocky soils where other plants fail, meaning they’re the perfect choice for rock gardens or dry areas in the yard where even grass doesn’t grow.

Save time and space with Yuccas because they’re low maintenance plants that can be planted and forgotten. You won’t need to constantly water or maintain them. By only growing 2 to 3 feet tall and wide they can fit anywhere, like close to the home or under trees in your landscape.

Because Yucca ‘Color Guard plants are cold hardy to growing zone four they survive the freezing conditions up North and are cold hardy down to -20 degrees. Even the heaviest blizzards can’t stop the Yucca from filling the winter landscape with vibrant color.

Yucca ‘Color Guard’ plants are prized for their beauty. They have sword shaped leaves with a cream-colored center, and green edges stemming from a central crown. In the fall the cream-colored areas turn a shade of pinkish purple for vivid fall color that lasts until spring.

In the summer Yuccas put on a unique floral display by growing a single stem that becomes covered with pure white, bell shaped flowers towards the top. The blooms fill the landscape with a sweet fragrance and attract butterflies, which are a delight to watch.

There are endless design possibilities for the Yucca ‘Color Guard’. They fit into gardens as beautiful accent pieces and can be planted close together to create borders. They even thrive in containers and can be placed on the porch or patio to frame entryways and even look great by the pool.

Planting & Care

It's Easy to Plant & Care for Your Yucca 'Color Guard'

Step 1: Dig Your Hole

Select a site with full to partial sun and moist or well drained soil for your Yucca 'Color Guard'.

First, dig each hole so that it is just shallower than the root ball and at least twice the width.

Then loosen the soil in the planting hole so the roots can easily break through.

Use your shovel or try dragging the points of a pitch fork along the sides and bottom of the hole.

Planting & Care

Step 2: Place Your Plant

Next, separate the roots of your Yucca 'Color Guard' gently with your fingers and position them downward in the hole.

The top of the root flare, where the roots end and the trunk begins, should be about an inch above the surrounding soil.

Then make sure the plant is exactly vertical in the hole.

To make it just right, use a level.

Step 3: Backfill Your Hole

As you backfill the hole, apply water to remove air pockets.

Remove debris like stones and grass and completely break up any dirt clumps.

Water your Yucca 'Color Guard' again after the transplant is complete.
