Lively Landscape Bling

If you’re looking for year-round color to invigorate a garden space, you’ve found it! A lustrous addition to the Southern Living Plant Collection, the Sunshine Ligustrum punctuates any landscape design with a bold array of verdant, yellow hues.

In spring, its petite, oval leaves emerge brilliant chartreuse. As the days get longer and the sun peaks, its glossy foliage transforms into a mass of dazzling, summer color ranging from cool, refreshing lime to vivid yellow-gold.

An evergreen shrub, this ligustrum maintains its lush prominence despite the onset of cooler temperatures, taking on a hint of orange as the shorter days of winter take hold.

Non-Invasive & Allergy Free

With the Sunshine Ligustrum, expect to enjoy all the upsides of the privet hedge cultivar and none of its shortcomings! Unlike its close cousins and their notorious reputation for multiplying, this hybrid doesn’t flower or reseed. So when spring comes “knocking,” the Sunshine won’t be adding to the pollen count!

Year-Round, Garden Feature

With bright, ornamental foliage and four seasons of interest, this ligustrum makes a versatile shrub for most any border configuration. It creates a lively hedge along pathways, drives or fence-lines. If you have some beds to fill, try arranging Sunshines in curved patterns or knot-like shapes -- your garden is guaranteed to get a second look by passersby.

When space is limited, this dense, compact shrub can be kept as small as one foot in diameter. Its radiant, yellow habitat calls attention to mixed container plantings or makes a statement as dramatic topiary décor.

Carefree, Sunny Disposition

As its name suggests, the Sunshine is easy-going and virtually maintenance-free. Living up to 30 years, it’s drought and heat tolerant, flourishes in just about any soil type, and naturally repels deer.

If you prefer a more informal setting, there’s no need to prune. Left to grow, the Sunshine reaches a maximum height of only four feet, spreading into a bullet shape, with soft, upright branches.

Although most Ligustrums prefer warmer climates, the Sunshine encounters low temperatures with ease, tolerating conditions down to 0 degrees. It even thrives in urban settings where air quality can test the fortitude of many plants and trees.

Its only requirement – a daily dose of full sun. Left in a shady corner, it’s an ordinary green plant. Find a location with ample exposure, and your Sunshine Ligustrum will be the “star” of the yard!

Whether it’s a splash of color you seek or a mass of brilliant, striking contrast, the Sunshine Ligustrum is a “ray of sunshine” the day it’s delivered! Get your order in today. Our experts are on hand to assist, ensuring you the best results from your newest garden addition.

Deer ate it
I got the beautiful ligustrum and we just decided to call it "Sunshine". It brightened up our back yard right away and cheered my spirits as I was thinking that I solved the problem with deer devouring my plants. Unfortunately our "Sunshine" does not repel the deer in our neighborhood. Our dear "Sunshine" was eaten the second night and there was only half of the bush left. Feeling bad, as I was expecting this bush to naturally repel deer, as it is stated in the description of the plant.

I only bought one. The color is incredible. I planted it beside a little red Amish Wagon. My little corner of the yard looks real nice. I am a first time gardener. Bought several plants, bushes and trees. So far the yellow color really sticks out. This company is outstanding. All the plants and bushes were carefully and securely packed. Our weather is very hot and humid, but everything survived. Great company, I highly recommend it.Karin

Packaged well and such a pretty plant!
These are so pretty and I was so excited to receive them and get them into our yard quickly! They arrived in a timely manner and packaged very damage at all. Great simple to follow instructions too...but I guess our soil or planting wasn't the best because they are not taking off in growth like we had hoped...still kind of puny looking and they've been planted since arrival and that was over a month ago...but we are holding out hope that they will spring to life and give us the look we were wanting.

A perfect choice for a difficult area.
The four Ligustrom planted at the top of our property flanking the road add beauty and boundary. These are new, but growing well. I love how the morning sun turns them into a lustrous gold and know they'll be a welcome sight all winter.
Young yet but glowing in the early morning sun.

Planting & Care

It's Easy to Plant & Care for Your Sunshine Ligustrum

Sunshine Ligustrum Planting Diretions

Seasonal, Location, and Exposure Considerations:

Many of the Privet shrubs are known for their prolific shedding of berries (and seeds) leading to their reputation for being somewhat invasive to the garden and yard.  Sunshine Ligustrum is a sterile Privet, so you’ll see nothing of the sort by this shrub.  While watering is important during establishment, they will grow to be quite drought (and heat) tolerant.  A minimum of 5 hours of sun is its preference, so seek full sun to partial shade locations.  They are rated to USDA Zones 6-10.  Quickly growing to about 4’ in both height and spread,  creating a compact form, Sunshine Ligustrum can be sheared and pruned as needed once established and fit well when planting in groups or on their own.

Soil Preferences

Not terribly picky regarding soil fertility, Sunshine Ligustrum will adapt to most any well drained soil that has average fertility.  It does not tolerate soggy soils.  With a fairly wide pH requirement of 6.0-8.0, this Privet will do well in most garden situations.

Planting and Care – Container Grown or in Pots

To attain its preferred growing media, use a high quality potting soil that drains well.  If necessary, amend it with some perlite or pumice type aggregate to facilitate drainage and prevent a soggy condition in the pot.  Grow only in pots with drainage holes in the bottom, and line the bottom of it with a thin landscape fabric or another similar material to keep your soil in the pot and prevent blockage of the holes.

Give your Sunshine Ligustrum plenty of room with a container of adequate size to provide 2-3 years before the need to size up.  A good guide is choosing a pot 4-6” wider than the container it came in.

You should be gentle while moving your plant from one container to the next as the roots are sensitive.  Loosen the feeder roots by hand, or spray with water from your garden hose.  Set the plant into your new pot with some soil in it to achieve a level about ½”-1” below the lip of the container.  This prevents spillage while providing your new container the ability to be watered well.

Moisture at this point is very important.  Immediately after planting, water until you see it run out of the holes in the container, and keep consistent moisture as your Ligustrum takes root.

Having said that, keep in mind to avoid a soggy soil in your pots at all times.

Planting and Care – Outdoor Growing in the Garden

When planting in the garden, your hole should be the same depth as the pot it came in, and about 2-3 times wider.   If necessary, amend the extracted soil with sand and/or perlite for drainage; or well composted manure, peat, or compost to provide water holding capacity and a steady, even supply of organic nutrition.   These organics are particularly beneficial in tight, clayey soils.  If you have good garden soil that is loamy and drains well, with reasonably good fertility; you can probably just back fill with that.

Keep in mind to be gentle with the roots, and spread out the feeder roots as described above.  Backfill or have loose soil in the bottom of your hole, set to a depth just an inch or so above the soil line to allow for settling, and gently backfill with your planting mix. Remember you’ll be filling only to the level of the soil in the purchased container, avoiding any additional soil at the crown or soil surface.   If your soil is known for being wet, and you have no better alternative site, you can grow your Sunshine Ligustrum on a raised type bed to avoid wet feet.  Fill your hole to about ½ full, then water and wait for the water to completely exit the soil, then finish filling, gently firming around the roots as you go, and water well when finished.  Your watering zone should include all the soil surrounding the planting as well so it’s all nicely and evenly moist well past the dripline.  Building a 2”-3” berm around the planting hole is a good idea as it will help contain the water, and it will eventually erode to the garden soil level around the plant; or you can physically rake it out after the first year or two.

As stated, if your soil has generally average or above fertility naturally, you don’t need to fertilize your new Sunshine.  You can use a little rooting fertilizer at the low end of the recommended rate provided by the manufacturer.  Mulching your plant with an inch or two of mulch away from the base of the shrub is also advised.  Avoid ‘green’ mulches that are not aged well.

While tolerant to drought once established, good watering is important until your plant reaches that stage.  You should water when the surface soil dries to 1-3” by touch.  Always water thoroughly and deeply, and include the soil well away from the perimeter of the roots and dripline.

Avoid highly soluble fertilizers if possible.  Slow release, organic based nutrient sources are the best.  Sunshine Ligustrum are not particularly heavy feeders.  If your pH is on the higher end or beyond the recommended range, choose a fertilizer source that is both slow release and contains Sulfur or Iron Sulfate.  Never fertilize late in the season so as to prevent frost and winter injury to new growth.

Weed, Insects, and Diseases

Ligustrums are very resistant to most insect and disease pests.  They’re not even tasty to deer and other wildlife!

Pruning and Training

You can shear or prune your Ligustrum most any time of year…just avoid doing so in mid to late summer as you’ll get too much new tender growth when the first frost hits.  No later than two months prior to your typical first frost date is a good guide.  First remove dead, damaged, and stray shoots with your hand pruners, making a clean cut just above the main form of the shrub.  Then you can lightly shear and shape to your heart’s content to achieve or maintain your desired shape.

What is the best time of year to plant Sunshine Ligustrum?
Taylor Q on Sep 29, 2017
BEST ANSWER: They can be planted all year, as long as the ground isn’t frozen. If you plant your tree during the summer, especially during a heat wave of drought then give your tree extra water. The best time to plant is in the fall, six weeks before the first frost so your tree can get rooted into the ground before winter, or in the spring six weeks after the final frost, giving it time to become established before summer heat sets in. Keep in mind that planting during the summer still gives your tree enough time to get rooted in before the winter.
