Planting & Care

It's Easy to Plant & Care for Your New River Purple Bougainvillea

New River Purple Bougainvillea Planting Diretions

Location:  The New River Purple Bougainvillea is a hybrid. It grows best in USDA plant hardiness zones 9 to 11. It can grow to a height of up to 40 feet. Space should be 4-6 feet between plants. When planting, pick a permanent location and avoid transplanting because the roots of the New River Purple Bougainvillea do not like being disturbed after planting. It grows best when used as a climber on walls, arbors, trellises, fences, gazebos, shade structures, into trees or across roofs.

Planting Instructions: Choose a planting location in full sun. The bougainvillea must have at least five hours or more of sunlight per day or it will fail to produce blooms and will only grow foliage.

The vine thrives in slightly acidic well-draining soil with a pH range of 5.6 to 6.5. It will grow in sandy, loam, or clay.  It does not like excessively wet soil. When planting in clay soil it is advised that you mix sand or loam into the planting location to facilitate drainage. Once established, it can withstand short periods of drought.

The New River Purple Bougainvillea is highly tolerant of salt and will thrive in a coastal region sandy soils.

Dig a hole twice as large as the bougainvillea’s root ball and just as deep. When removing the bougainvillea from the nursery container take great care not to disturb its delicate roots too much. Place the plant into the hole and backfill gently tamping down the soil to remove any air pockets. Water the bougainvillea thoroughly after planting to help settle the soil around its roots.

Irrigation: Do not overwater the bougainvillea. Allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Too much water will encourage the plant to grow an abundance of foliage and very few flowers.

Fertilizer: Fertilize the bougainvillea with a water soluble fertilizer. Use a 15-15-15 balanced fertilizer every two weeks at ½ tsp of fertilizer per gallon of water. A fertilizer for azaleas also works well on bougainvillea. Follow the instructions on the label for application ratios. Fertilize the bougainvillea during the blooming season. Reduce the frequency of fertilizer applications during the winter months.

Pruning: After flowering, the bougainvillea can be pruned. It will withstand hard pruning to maintain its size but it can also thrive with little or no pruning. It can also be shaped during the winter months when the evenings are starting to get warm.
