Great Plant!

We received the gardenia in good shape and with lots of flower buds. We planted it in a bigger container, watering everyday and put outside for better sunshine. Two weeks later, it started flowering every day! We have so far got ~ 20 flowers with great smell. I like the gardenia very much and will buy some more later.

My wife' favorite flower

This was a Christmas present. So far everything is going according to the instructions. Will probably keep it as a house plant. She loves the smell of gardenias.

Beautiful fragrant blooms

i have had the gardenia for the summer and it has been super healthy looking no brown leaves and 5 huge beautiful heavenly-scented blooms so far. My prior two plants bought at the local store did not bloom at all so i am thrilled.

Planting & Care

The August Beauty Gardenia (or Gardenia jasminoides 'August Beauty') is a prolific blooming shrub that will produce large, elegant, sweet smelling flowers and decorative, glossy foliage. The showy white blooms emerge in the early to late summer seasons. They last for roughly three months and are fantastic for cutting. The August Beauty can be successfully grown in zones 8 through 11 but can also be grown as a wonderful indoor, potted plant. It will mature to a height of 4-6 feet tall and about 3-4 feet wide.

Choose a location: These plants can handle full sun all the way down to partial shade depending on your location. We recommend for Northern States, to plant August Beauties in full to partial sunlight. Southern states, can place these in areas with partial sunlight to partial shade. The ideal planting times for gardenias is typically spring and fall. The August Beauty Gardenias bloom in late spring and early summer, and provide up to 3 months of blooms for you.

The planting location should ideally have well drained, acidic soil. You can test the pH of your soil and if necessary amend the soil with compost or an organic planting mix to help make it more acidic. The ideal acidity range should be between a 5.0 to 6.0 pH.

*In warm weather areas, gardenias will do best if given morning sun exposure and afternoon shade.

Planting directions (in ground): Gardenias can be spaced anywhere from 2-6 feet apart. If you’re creating a hedge, you may want to space the plants 2-3 feet apart to create a more dense hedge. Be sure that the location has good drainage.

1) When planting these beautiful plants, select your ideal space and dig a hole as deep as the root ball and twice the width. Loosen the soil removed from the hole so it can be used to plant the Gardenia.
2) Place the plant in the hole and place the ground soil and planting mix around the root ball. Firmly pack the soil around the plant to help remove any air pockets.
3) Once you are finished deeply water your plant and mulch around it. Avoid letting the mulch touch the plant.

Planting directions (potted): Gardenias do well in the ground but can also be successfully grown in containers. You can keep them as patio plants and then move them indoors during the colder months to be grown as houseplants.

1) Place them in a well draining container at least 1-2 sizes larger than the original container the plant came in.
2) Fill in the pot space around the gardenia using an organic potting medium.
3) Place it in a location with bright sun and ample humidity. A south facing window in your home should provide ample sun exposure.
4) You can keep the humidity up around the plant by misting it daily or placing it on a tray with pebbles and water. As the water evaporates it will feed humidity to the atmosphere around the gardenia.

Watering: Water plants placed in the ground with one inch of water weekly unless you have rainfall. The soil should never be allowed to be soggy. You may need to increase the amount of water provided during the hotter seasons especially with temperatures of 80 degrees or hotter.

For potted plants you can water thoroughly but make sure that the soil is not too saturated. You can test to see if the plant needs more water by sticking your index finger into the soil down to a depth of about 2 inches. If the soil is still damp at the depth, leave the gardenia alone. If it feels like it has become dry and sandy-like, go ahead and water until you see it coming from the drainage holes and stop.

Fertilizing: Your Gardenias can be fertilized once every 3-4 weeks from April through November. You can use a formula like 30-10-10 or a fertilizer high in nitrogen. If you notice the leaves on your plant starting to yellow, you can mix in a tablespoon of Epsom Salt with a gallon of water and apply this around your plant.

Pruning: August Beauty Gardenias are best pruned in the summer after the plant has bloomed.  Thinning out the plant helps improve the air circulation around your gardenia. You can remove any dead, dying, broken or diseased branches from the tree. Be sure to also prune back any branches with spent flowers.

Pest and Disease: Gardenias can have pest issues from time to time. The most common ones are aphids, white flies and scale. These are easily treated by either washing the insects off the plant or applying Neem Oil. You can apply the product as needed according to the instructions until the plant is rid of the insects.
