1. Planting: Roses thrive with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. To plant, check if the potting mix in the container is dry, and if it is, water it thoroughly. When digging a hole for planting, ensure it's wide enough and deep enough for the root ball. Add organic matter like compost or aged manure to the soil dug from the hole. When removing the plant from the container, gently break up the sides of the root ball with your thumbs and untangle any circling roots at the bottom. Place the root ball in the hole so that the top is level with the surrounding soil. For the best results, plant roses in spring or fall to encourage root development. Avoid planting roses in summer because high temperatures can stress the plants and cause them to focus on above-ground growth before establishing strong root systems.

2. Watering: Water plants in the morning to avoid wet foliage at night. Water thoroughly every 2 weeks in dry weather and once a week if there's little rainfall during the growing season and fall.

3. Fertilizing: For best rose growth, fertilize during the growing season. Add compost or aged manure in early spring. After the first bloom, use a 15-30-15 fertilizer. Organic gardeners can also add compost or aged manure in spring and use organic fertilizer after the first bloom.

4. Pruning: Prune roses in early to mid-spring when growth breaks from the canes. Remove deadwood, control growth, and promote flowering. For climbers, trim thinner side shoots in early spring and attach new stems to their supports. Cut back tall rose bushes by one-third to one-half in early spring. Remove spent flowers of reblooming roses to encourage more blooms, except for rugosas, which produce attractive hips.
