Eighty nine dollars plus oversized shipping might be a little high for these but hopefully will pay off in the long run.
4 trees arrived in this fall in individual planters, two trees per box. Ordered 6 to 7 foot trees. They probably were that but only as big around as my thumb. Main leader was cut off to make it fit in their boxes. Not much by the way of branches. Will use as a Charlie Brown Christmas Tree this year. Hopefully will develop roots this fall and start growing next spring.

These are hardy and arrived in good health
These took to the soil like a duck to water and are doing just fine, even in our current drought. I water them every other day and they never even hinted at wilting or being stressed.

First time buyer, not so happy.
I received the Shumard Oak fully leafed out 5 weeks before leaf-out in New Hampshire where I live. The leaves were loaded with scale. The leaf tips proceeded to brown and curl. I sent the company an Email and I received a prompt reply. I was told that I would be returned a small refund of $20.00 and that Neem oil would probably take care of the problem. It did but the Neem oil cost me $20.00. I moved the tree in and out of the house each night and day until leaf-out. This all caused me unnecessary trouble but the tree is now happily planted.

Looking good
For as short a time as I've had it, it seems to be doing well and surviving its transfer to my yard. It is withstanding the daily winds quite well (no houses around us yet).

Planted three Shumard Oak Trees
These trees are taking to their new home quite well.
Got them in two gallon containers. They were four to five feet tall and about 0.75 diameter. Well shaped, good condition. I recommend you make your selection from Fast Growing Trees inventory.

Planting & Care

It's Easy to Plant & Care for Your Shumard Oak Tree

Shumard Oak Tree Planting Diretions

Planting Instructions: Plant your Red Oak in a spot in your yard that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. Pick a spot that will give this tree plenty of room to grow. Avoid places near powerlines or buildings. You'll want to give this tree at least 50' of space. The more open the space, the wider this tree will grow. The Red Oak prefers soil that has abundant amounts of natural fungi. If you live in poor soil or urban soil conditions, be sure to add a significant amount of compost or manure to your soil. After you plant the tree, tamp down the soil until it is firm. Thoroughly water the base of the tree, so that water penetrates the roots. Spread a good amount of mulch around the base of the tree to retain moisture. You may want to cage in your tree at the beginning of its life as deer and rabbit will eat the young stalks of the tree.

Watering: Water the tree to keep the ground moist. Watering deeply, once a week, should be enough to help your young tree establish roots. Once your tree matures, you only need to water in the dry seasons where you get less than 1 inch per month.

Maintenance: The Red Oak is very easy to care for.  If you notice that your tree is not growing 2ft every year, you can add a general purpose fertilizer once a year.  You will likely see insects on your tree throughout its life, but they are not typically harmful. However, certain types of insects including canker worms and gypsy moths can devastate an unhealthy tree. If you see them, you'll need to treat your tree to protect its life. Otherwise, the Red Oak is susceptible to some diseases, but pruning any diseased branches as it grows will prevent the tree's mortality. An occasional watchful eye and consistent moisture levels is all this tree needs to survive its youth and mature.

Lynda B on Jul 2, 2017
How fast does the Shumard Oak grow?
Yvette H on Jul 2, 2017
BEST ANSWER: My tree had 10 to 12 inches of new growth when it arrived. I read on the web that this is an average amount of growth within one year. Soil and sun and rainfall will impact the average, but not by much. For an oak tree this is considered medium to fast growing. But this average growth applies to trees that are well established, so do not expect a foot of new growth the first year you plant it unless it is early spring and it has not started the new growth yet. Even then it may take a while to get nestled into your soil.
Does this tree loose it's leaves seasonally?
AUDRY W on Nov 30, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It does, but very late and it will retain some of the old leaves. Mine turned a nice reddish bronze and a dozen or so are clinging for dear life! The fall winds took the less tenacious!
what is the best time of year to plant this tree Spring or Fall?
Maria E on Oct 10, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Either Spring or Fall.
Does it have surface roots? I have a live oak and the roots are a constant trip hazard.
William M on Mar 10, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I haven’t seen any. I have about 9 of those trees, and we put a bit of chips out about 2’ diameter of the tree for mowing purposes, but I do the mowing and have not seen any roots atop. But maybe the chips hide them from the sun?
