The benefits of the Drop ‘N Grow™ bag…

By growing these trees in burlap bags, the roots grow into the cloth, rather than circling around a pot. This forces these trees to put out thousands of fine hair roots. These roots bring moisture and nutrients into the plants. This means you get a tree that will become established quicker and provide you with superior and faster growth.

These will be the easiest trees you have ever planted! Simply dig your hole, place the Drop 'N Grow™ bag in the center (burlap included) then use excess dirt to fill the hole. That's it!

First Sign Of Spring

Butterfly Magnolia Trees let you know that spring has officially arrived by covering themselves with bright yellow blossoms. Each flower is a vibrant shade of canary yellow, and they glow in the landscape like miniature orbs of sunlight, erasing winter drear from your garden

The bright blossoms get their butterfly name because each flower petal points upwards, giving them the look of butterfly wings. Each flower looks like an elegant butterfly perching on top of the branches, inviting onlookers to marvel at their beauty.

While most magnolia blossoms are white or pink, the Butterfly Magnolia puts a modern twist on this traditional spring flower by being bright yellow. The Butterfly Magnolia Tree is a rare and unique Magnolia variety that your friends and neighbors have most likely never seen before.

Don’t wait for blooms! Butterfly Magnolias bloom in the early spring, often before they grow leaves. While your neighbor’s yards still look bleak from winter, yours will be sporting glowing spring flowers.

Butterfly Magnolias arouse multiple senses because not only are their blooms enchanting, they are also fragrant. They allow a rich, flowery perfume to fill the landscape with an unforgettable sweet scent.

With a thick, rounded canopy and by only growing to about 15 to 20 feet tall, butterfly magnolias are an excellent choice for ornament flowering trees in compact areas. They fit perfectly in tight spaces near structures like sidewalks, homes and driveways.

Grow Butterfly Magnolia Trees almost anywhere in the country. They are recommended for growing zones 4 through 9, meaning they will survive the harsh winter conditions up north and the heat and droughts in the South.

Butterfly Magnolias are low maintenance trees with a high resistance to pests, and diseases. By planting Butterfly Magnolias you will have tons of hands free flowers every spring.

Amazing service and tree
I ordered this tree in early July and not only did it arrive promptly the next day, it was healthy and very well packaged. Planting went well and the tree began sending out new leaves and growing almost immediately! It was a joy to see until an unfortunate accident with my contractor doing some repairs left it snapped off about 3 feet above the ground a short time later. Lucky for me your customer service is phenomenal and made arrangements to ship me our a replacement. I will only buy trees from you from now on!

Off to a bad start
Lost the leader and had just horizontal branches for a few years- unfortunately just at deer height, so had very few blooms. Now a vertical branch has taken over as leader along with regular spraying for deer and have had a beautiful yellow-flowering tree for the spring-time show. Very attached to it. Beautiful form in Winter too.

Waiting patiently...
I give this a five stars even though it didnt bloom for me this year im optimistic it will next year. It came looking fairly healthy almost 6', but with suprisingly tiny root ball in a gallon container. I pretty much figured it might take a full calendar year to establish its roots. We have a privacy fense but still get wicked winds, so i put a sturdy support system and it has bushed out many new stems. I did notice for first time ever a neighbor few streets over has a more mature butterfly magnolia, litterally blosssoms were to die for. Ill wait as long as it takes to see those buttery yellow blossoms out my bay windows.

Planting & Care

It's Easy to Plant & Care for Your Magnolia 'Butterflies' Tree

Magnolia 'Butterflies' Tree Planting Diretions

The Magnolia 'Butterflies' tree (M. acuminata x M. denudata) is a decorative, flowering tree producing bright yellow blossoms that some compare to miniature orbs of sunlight. The fragrant blooms point upwards giving them the appearance of butterfly wings, hence the tree’s name. This particular magnolia tree is quite cold tolerant after it has become established, withstanding cold snaps as low as -20 degrees! These moderately growing, full to partial sun loving trees are best suited for USDA growing zones 4-9 and will mature to heights of 15-25 tall and 10-15 feet wide. The blooms come in the early spring bringing forth an unforgettably sweet scent and actually emerge before the leaves do! Great for compact areas near your home, sidewalks or driveway this low maintenance, attractive tree is sure to add splendor to your landscape.

Location: Choose a location away from cement sidewalks or driveways so that they are not disturbed by the rapid root growth of the magnolia. If possible, pick a spot on the north side of the yard with a safe distance from the house.

Planting Instructions:
1) Choose a site that is rich in organic matter and drains well. If desired, you can add compost into the planting hole and mix with soil. A slightly acidic soil is best.
2) Carefully examine the root system, cutting off any roots that are growing in a circular pattern before planting.
3) The hole should be dug slightly larger than the root system of the plant, 2-3 times the width and just as deep as the root ball.
4) Position the tree in the ground and mix the soil with the compost.
5) Hold the tree straight as you begin to back fill the hole, tamping down as you go to prevent air pockets from forming and then water to settle the soil.
6) Apply some mulch after planting to moderate soil temperatures and moisture conditions. This will also assist with keeping competing growth at bay.

Watering: Water the magnolia frequently during the root systems early development, then periodically as necessary. Water just beyond the branch line, to reach the full extent of the roots.

Fertilization: Magnolias are susceptible to salt damage from over fertilizing, limit fertilizer application to iron chelates only as a treatment for “chlorosis.” You can feed your tree with a controlled-release fertilizer formula if new growth is noticeably slow. Just be sure to follow the application instructions on the bottle for optimum effectiveness.

Pruning: Prune your magnolia at the first sign of any dead leaves, branches or flowers. Deciduous magnolia trees should be pruned right after bloom. Prune evergreen magnolias, right before spring. When pruning, remove the branch down to its base. Prune your tree to maintain the required shape as well as to keep the rapid growth of branches under control. Prune the lower branches as necessary as the tree grows.

how long do the blooms last and when do they bloom in zone 7? I am in memphis tn thanks
sherrainex on Mar 25, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Butterfly Magnolias bloom in the early spring, often before they grow leaves. They should be fine to bloom in Zone 7.
I have a magnolia butterfly tree two years and no flowers. Getting enough. What might be the problem?
Lynne on Aug 4, 2017
BEST ANSWER: First make sure you are in the correct growing zone 4 to 9. They do not like to be in too much cold. If blooming problems are not related to the climate, the next place to look is where the tree is planted. Magnolias can grow in shade but they bloom best and most generously in full sun. Soil quality might also have a role in the problem. It is best to use rich, acidic, well-draining soil with a pH of 5.5 to 6.5, amended with organic material.
Can this be grown indoors?
Fran S on Mar 7, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It would not be recommended for the Magnolia 'Butterflies' Tree to be grown indoors. It is meant for outdoor planting. It is hardy to Zones 4 to 9.
What time of year is best for planting this tree in northeastern Ohio?
Marcia P on Aug 17, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Tree planting season in the US is in the fall all the way up until the ground is completely frozen - as long as you are within zones 4-9. The plant may not be as cold-hardy until it is established so make sure to mulch for root insulation.
How far away from house should it be planted?
