1. Planting: Choose a sunny spot with well-draining soil, ideally amended with organic matter. Dig a hole that's twice as wide as the root ball but just as deep. Place the tree in the hole and backfill, ensuring the graft union is level with the soil surface. Water thoroughly after planting.

Container Growing: Creating the right environment in a container is crucial for a thriving avocado plant. Select a pot that is 1–2 inches wider in diameter than the current nursery pot. The pot's width should be roughly equal to its height. Terracotta pots are ideal, but any container must have adequate drainage holes. Use a citrus or cactus potting mix, and improve drainage by amending it with extra perlite. The top of the soil line should sit 1–2 inches below the container rim. Planting too deeply can lead to drainage problems.

Water only when the top 2 inches of soil feel dry. If the plant drops leaves due to stress or flowering, temporarily reduce watering until new leaves emerge.

Winter Care: Move the plant indoors once nighttime temperatures consistently drop to 50°F. Avocados require 5 hours of bright, direct sunlight daily. In northern or low-light conditions, supplement the natural light with a full-spectrum grow light. Reduce water in winter and stop fertilizing. Hand pollinate the flowers when the plant is kept indoors.

2. Watering: Water your Stewart Avocado regularly, especially during dry spells. Aim for deep, infrequent watering to promote strong root growth. Avoid waterlogged conditions as they can lead to root rot. The tree prefers moisture but should never sit in standing water.

3. Pruning: Prune your avocado tree annually to maintain its size and encourage healthy growth. Remove any dead or crossing branches and shape the tree to your desired height while allowing ample sunlight penetration. Early spring is an ideal time for pruning before new growth begins.

4. Fertilizing: Use a balanced fertilizer specifically formulated for avocados in early spring and again in summer. Follow package instructions for amounts based on your tree size. This will ensure your tree gets essential nutrients for healthy growth and consistent fruit production.
