Bright Red Blooms, Even in Cold Climates

The Lucy Althea tree is a spectacular dwarf flowering tree that adds charm to any home landscape. With large, vivid red-pink blooms, this Rose of Sharon tree offers an abundance of flowers. Its long bloom period extends from summer through fall, attracting butterflies and hummingbirds.

This variety of hibiscus is highly resistant to deer and diseases, making it an excellent low-maintenance choice. To keep the Lucy Althea tree looking its best, simply trim the canopy in late winter or early spring, ensuring a neat and attractive form.

One of the key features of this rose of Sharon is that it is non-invasive. It does not spread by seed like many other varieties of althea, allowing you to enjoy its beauty without worrying about unwanted growth.

As a dwarf flowering tree, the Lucy Althea fits perfectly into almost any landscape. It can even be grown in pots, offering versatility for various gardening spaces.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: First, select an area with well-drained soil and full to partial sun (4 to 8 hours of sunlight per day). When you're ready to plant, dig a hole that's twice the width of your plant's root ball and just as deep. Then, place your shrub, backfill the soil and water to settle the roots. Finally, mulch the surrounding soil to conserve moisture.

2. Watering: Water your Althea Tree once or twice weekly in order to conserve soil moisture. If you're not sure when to water your shrub, check the soil with your index finger, about 3 inches down. If the soil is dry here, it's time to water.

3. Fertilizing: Fertilize before new growth begins in the spring with a well-balanced blend, such as 10-10-10.

4. Pruning: Prune your Rose of Sharon in the winter, after flowering, in order to shape your shrub.

Extreme heat has been hard on it.

The rose of Sharon tree arrived in good condition. Unfortunately, the 100 degree heat has not been good for it. It rested in the shade for several days before I planted it. I’m torn between watering to prevent wilting in the heat and leaves turning yellow from overwatering.

Fast Growing Trees Plant ExpertHi Lucy, Thank you for sharing your feedback with us! Managing a newly planted tree in 100-degree weather is one of the toughest challenges a gardener can face, and we completely understand your anxiety over the yellowing leaves. Don't worry, you aren't necessarily overwatering! In extreme summer heat, Rose of Sharon trees will naturally sacrifice their older leaves, turning them yellow and shedding them to conserve energy and water. To help your tree find its balance, we highly recommend applying a three-inch layer of organic mulch around the base, keeping it a couple of inches away from the trunk itself. This mulch acts like a cooling blanket, trapping moisture in the soil and preventing those vulnerable young roots from overheating. Thank you for your dedicated care during this heatwave! Don't hesitate to get in touch if you need any help!
