Planting & Care

1. Planting: First, select an area with well-drained soil and full to partial sun (4 to 8 hours of sunlight per day). When you're ready to plant, dig a hole that's twice the width of your plant's root ball and just as deep. Then, place your shrub, backfill the soil and water to settle the roots. Finally, mulch the surrounding soil to conserve moisture.

2. Watering: Water your Althea Tree once or twice weekly in order to conserve soil moisture. If you're not sure when to water your shrub, check the soil with your index finger, about 3 inches down. If the soil is dry here, it's time to water.

3. Fertilizing: Fertilize before new growth begins in the spring with a well-balanced blend, such as 10-10-10.

4. Pruning: Prune your Rose of Sharon in the winter, after flowering, in order to shape your shrub.

    Still Growing!

This tree is surviving record heat and drought slightly NE of San Antonio, TX. I am impressed. The double blooms are gorgeous and the spent blooms turn a contrasting mauve-ish purple. I can't wait to see how it looks once we get out of this record long 100+ degree heat!

Red Rose of Sharon Althea Tree Purchase

Couldn't believe what great shape the tree was in after traveling across county to the Intermountain West! We opened the box and it looked great- no drooping. We planted the tree the same day and it transitioned and is growing well! Thank you!

    So far so good

It arrived unexpectedly on Mother's Day (received a ship notice 2 days later) but got planted within 3 hours of arrival. Never had (or seen) one of these trees before so it's all a new experience. Looks real healthy. It has lost only one leaf. It shows new growth very slowly emerging all over the tree but nothing that looks like flower buds. Looking forward to seeing it bloom.
