Planting & Care

It's Easy to Plant & Care for Your Comice Pear Tree

Comice Pear Tree Planting Diretions

Location: The Cyrus communis, commonly called the Comice pear tree, grows best in USDA plant hardiness zones 5 to 9. It requires 400 chill hours below 45 degrees Fahrenheit to successfully produce fruit.

The tree is self-fertile but can be planted with a Bartlett pear tree to produce an even more abundant crop.

Planting Instructions: Choose a planting site that provides at least six to eight hours of sunlight per day. Ideally, the site should afford some wind protection in areas that suffer high winds.

The Comice pear tree grows best in soil with a pH level of 6.5. The soil should be well-draining. The tree does not tolerate overly wet roots.

Dig a hole that is at least twice or three times the diameter of the tree’s root ball. Add an abundant amount of organic matter to the soil at a ratio of 50 percent hummus with 50 percent soil. Place the tree’s roots into the hole and gently smooth out the roots. Fill the hole halfway with soil and organic matter and fill the hole with water. Allow the water to drain into the soil. Once the water has drained, finish filling the hole with the dirt and hummus. Tamp the soil down around the tree to remove all air pockets.

The tree’s graft union should sit two inches above the soil. The bud union should always point north to avoid excessive exposure to the sun.

Build a three or four-inch tall circular dam of mud around the tree and fill with water. The dam will keep the water from flowing away from the tree’s roots when you water the tree.

Apply three inches of mulch such as bark chips, pine needles, peat moss, or recycled plastic chunks around the base of the tree in and outside the soil dam. Keep the mulch three inches away from the tree’s trunk. The mulch will help keep the soil moist and retard weed growth.

Watering: Keep the soil around the Comice pear tree moist but not overly water-logged. Water the tree once per week during the dry season.

Fertilizing: In the early spring, fertilize the tree using a general purpose fertilizer. Follow the instructions on the fertilizer’s label for amounts.

Staking: In areas with excessive wind, young trees may require staking. Use one or two stakes to secure the trunk of the tree. Tie the tree to the stakes using twine or natural fiber rope to prevent damage to the tree's trunk.

Pruning: Prune away any suckers as they appear. In the early spring, prune any diseased or damaged branches from the Comice pear tree. When the tree is one-year-old, prune a few branches from the tree’s canopy to allow airflow and sunlight to reach the tree.  The third year the tree can be pruned to maintain its height and shape if desired.

Pests and Disease: Always remove the undergrowth, fallen fruit,  and weeds from beneath the Comice pear tree to prevent diseases and pests. Watch the tree closely for any pests or signs of disease. Promptly treat using a targeted fungicide or insecticide once the problem has been identified.
