The Perfect Evergreen for tight Spaces

The Wissel’s Saguaro Cypress is a space saving evergreen that will never grow too large for its space. By only growing to two feet wide, the Wissel’s Saguaro Cypress can comfortably fit in even the smallest landscapes.

Wissel’s Saguaro Cypress trees are the ideal choice for low maintenance foundation plants or for planting close to structures like homes, sidewalks and driveways. They are widely used in urban areas where other trees can’t fit.

Their tall and narrow growth habit allows them to thrive in containers, so they can frame entryways and accent porches.

Aside from being highly functional, Wissel’s Saguaro Cypress trees have a stunning blue-green hue that stands out in the landscape with a vibrant glow. Your home will serve as the perfect backdrop for these cypress trees to pop against.

The Wissel’s Saguaro Cypress Tree’s foliage is textured, light and feathery. It breaks up the landscape by giving it shape and visual appeal. Your friends and neighbors will love gazing at the vivid trees in your landscape instead of boring buildings that all look the same.

The unique shape of the Wissel’s Saguaro Cypress makes it the must have evergreen. They have branches that grow with an upward curve away from the trunk giving them a similar shape to Saguaro Cacti.

The branches swing out like arms to wave hello or ask for a high five. They will greet your guests with a perky wave and invite them into your landscape to enjoy your beautiful home and garden.

Planting & Care

It's Easy to Plant & Care for Your Wissel's Saguaro Cypress

Wissel's Saguaro Cypress Planting Diretions

The Wissel’s Saguaro Cypress Trees are unique evergreens and the ideal choice for low maintenance foundation plants or for planting close to structures like homes, sidewalks and driveways. This variety known as “Chamaecyparis” performs best in USDA growing zone 5-9. Wissel’s Saguaro Cypress are moderate growers, maturing to a height of 18-20 feet tall and 1-2 feet in width.

Location: When choosing a location for your Wissel’s Saguaro Cypress, find somewhere that offers full sun to partial sun with soil that is well draining.

Planting Instructions:
1) Dig the hole twice the size as the root ball and just a little shallower.
2) Loosen the soil in and around the hole so the roots can easily break through.
3) Use your finger to separate the roots of your Wissel’s Saguaro Cypress tree and gently position them downward in the hole. The top of the root flare (where the roots end and the trunk begins) should be about an inch above the surrounding soil.
4) Hold the tree straight as you begin to backfill the site, tamping down the soil as you go.
5) Back fill the hole, apply water to settle the soil and remove any air pockets.

Watering: Water your cypress tree evenly until the soil becomes moist. You’ll want the area to look and feel moist but not to the point where it’s over saturated or soggy. Allow the soil to dry for a few days until it feels dry to the touch about half an inch below the surface. A slow drip from a garden hose works best as it allows the water to penetrate the soil deeply down to the roots without over saturating it.

During excessive hot and dry weather you may need to up the watering to three times weekly. Some regions in the Southwestern U.S. can have very dry winters, if located in that area and suffering a winter drought, you should water twice a month through the winter season.

Fertilizing: Fertilize your tree after a year of growth, once the roots system has had enough time to establish. This will speed up the growth of your tree and provide beneficial nutrients. Using a general fertilizer such as a 10-10-10 formula once every spring will give it a boost. Alternatively, you can feed the tree with solid tree fertilizer spikes labeled for use on evergreens. You’ll find the proper number of spikes to use in the directions on the fertilizer nutrients.

Pruning: If you intend on letting your cypress tree grow to its full, mature height then very little pruning will be needed. If you plan to keep your trees from growing past a certain point or want them to stay in an ornate shape, then pruning more regularly will be required.

Pest and Disease: The Wissel’s Saguaro Cypress is extremely disease resistant but can sometimes suffer from canker or needle blight. Trees, like people, can suffer from diseases due to stress. Under watering and extreme heat are the biggest causes of distress. In the case of cankers, trim off browning limbs. For needle blight, you will have yellowing needles and green pustules near the end of the stem. For both of these instances, spray with a copper-fungicide, making sure to follow packaging instructions for the optimum effectiveness.
