Multi-Colored Unique Shaped Cherries

Get Big Delicious Cherries
Cherries are the stars of this tropical-looking Pitangatuba plant. They grow up to 2 inches, and are oblong in shape.  Each cherry has deep ribbed indentions which create the shape of a star. They look similar in shape to the sliceable Star-Fruit ‘Carambola’, however there is no relation.

The Flavor is Out of This World
The fruit of the Star-Cherry Pitangatuba is tender and highly juicy. The taste is comparable to an apricot or passion fruit. The pulp can be described as smooth and terrifically tart.

There’s plenty to create in the kitchen with this cherry’s unique and exotic flavor! Some prefer its tart taste with added sweetener; it pairs famously with vanilla ice-cream! Create a sweet sauce from pureed Star-Cherries as a topping for cheesecakes. Try your hand at home-made Star-Cherry sorbet, or add them to smoothies.

Enjoy Bursts of Ever-Changing Vibrant Colors
At each stage of growth, these cherries are as vivid and shiny as colors from the Carnival de Rio. The fruit is deep green at first; then transforms to bright lime before turning canary yellow. It’s ready to pick when fully ripe at a bright yellow-orange!

Outstanding White Flowers Escalate the Charm of this Bush
While the radiant colors of the cherries are impressive, so are the beautiful white flowers that cover this shrub.  Their flamboyant cluster of white filaments burst from the petal’s center like a fire-works display! So not only is this tree functional as a prolific producer of fruit, it’s a magnificent gift of nature that beautifies any setting.

Your Bush Grows Well in a Container or Planted in the Ground
Known to grow wild along the banks of the Rio de Janeiro, this bush can grow up to 6 feet tall. If you’re looking for a little privacy for you and your family to enjoy your own yard, this bush is a terrific option as a living fence. Consider planting a row and enjoy the new view of flowers and cherries rather than your neighbors or traffic.

This self-pollinating species will eagerly thrive in a Container.  With a distinctive tropical appearance, the Star-Cherry bush will most likely be the center of attention as part of your patio décor.   The fruit is incredibly aromatic and will fill the air with a sweet and tropical scent.

Butterflies and other pollinators will be captivated by the enticing aroma, as well as anyone relaxing near this alluring tree.

Over Half a Year of Flowers and Fruit
This shrub is prolific, and is known to bloom over six months! Expect a non-stop parade of showy white blossoms followed by star shaped fruit. It is sun-loving; the more sun you provide, the more this tree has to offer you! Though it produces happily on its own, place it amongst other Star-Cherry ‘Pitangatuba’ shrubs for an even more spectacular show.

Easy to Grow
This tough little shrub adapts wonderfully to all soil types and conditions. It can even handle moderate drought. It does better in cooler climates than most tropical trees, and even tolerates a touch of freezing temperatures.  Bring your potted plant inside in areas where winter temperatures regularly dip below freezing. It is sure to recharge and reward you with another showy display in spring!

This spectacular shrub will be ready to impress as soon as it is shipped to your door! Order now and be ready for a dazzling display of delicious fruit from your Star-Cherry .Pitangatuba.

Doing great!
I live above snow line in CA and received my tree in late December. We had a strange winter so kept the tree in the house under grow lights until May. It is healthy and already has a number of blooms. Hopefully they will turn into cherries!

Childhood memories fulfilled.
I have loved these sweet when dark red or sour when light red cherries. I grew up eating them. Having searched everywhere, I was overjoyed when I found them here at FGT's. I ordered 2. When I received them I was so happy. Beautiful green leaves, healthy limbs. I would have given a full 5 stars if those leaves and limbs had not been covered in weavels. So I pulled out a bottle of rubbing alcohol and swabs. Covering each weavel one by one. Planted the trees and hoped for the best. They are growing and are even more beautiful.

Planting & Care

It's Easy to Plant & Care for Your Star Cherry Tree (Pitangatuba)

Star Cherry Tree (Pitangatuba) Planting Diretions

Location: The Eugenia uniflora L, also called the Surinam cherry or Brazilian cherry, is highly adaptable to tropical and subtropical regions of the world. In such locations, it is widely grown as a single garden specimen or as a hedge. The tree can be grown outdoors in USDA planting zones 9,10, and 11. In all other planting zones, it should be grown in a container where it can be brought indoors or moved to a sheltered location if the temperature drops below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. If the temperature drops below 28 degrees Fahrenheit, the tree will perish.

Planting Instructions: Plant the Surinam cherry tree in a full sun area. Ideally, the tree should receive at least 12 hours of sunlight per day to encourage fruiting. It will grow in partial shade, but may not produce an adequate crop of fruit or its growth may be stunted.

The Surinam cherry grows in virtually any soil type. It can even tolerate standing water around its root system for short periods of time, but over an extended time, the tree’s roots will begin to rot. When planting in clay soil, consider mixing perlite into the soil mixture to provide adequate drainage. Dig the planting hole at least twice as large as the tree’s root system. Place the tree into the hole and tamp the soil down around the tree’s root system to remove all air pockets

Place the Surinam cherry tree at least four feet away from other shrubs or trees to allow it ample room to grow. When planting as a hedge, space the trees three feet apart.

Container Growth: Choose a container that provides adequate room for the tree’s root system so it does not require repotting at a later date. Ideally, the pot should measure at least 18 to 24 inches in diameter and have sides that stand at least  20 inches in height. The pot should have drainage holes at the base so water can free flow away from the tree’s roots. Plant the tree in an even mixture of soil, perlite, and sand.

Watering -- Lightly water the Surinam cherry tree so the soil feels moist to the touch. Do not water the tree again until the top two inches of soil has dried completely out. Generally, the tree thrives with a once a week watering regime. In tropical areas with frequent rain showers, the tree only needs infrequent supplemental water.

Fertilizing: Use a water-soluble fertilizer during the growing season to encourage fruit production. Follow the instructions on the fertilizer’s label for application ratios.

Pruning: The Surinam cherry tree does not require regular pruning, but many people opt to prune the tree to control its shape and size or to maintain it as a kept hedge. The Surinam cherry tree should be pruned immediately after flowering if shaping is desired. Heavy pruning will slow down the tree’s fruit production. Avoid removing more than a third of the tree’s limbs each season. Diseased or damaged limbs need to be immediately removed.

Pests and Disease: Scale insects and caterpillars may feed on the tree’s foliage. However, they rarely pose a significant threat to the tree and are easily controlled by applying an insecticide. Follow the instructions on the insecticide when applying.
