Award-Winning Korean Fire Camellia is Cold Hardy

Stunning visual appeal and the ability to withstand sub-zero temperatures attributed to the Korean Fire being awarded the Gold Medal Plant Award by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society. Showcase this prized camellia variety in YOUR garden.

Captivating Colorful Bloom
Bursting with bright red petals enclosed in warm gold stamens, this japonica flower shoots out in a funnel shape at the end of thin, stable branches covered in dark green foliage.

Bring the romance into your home with the lovely camellia bush. Just place clippings in a short vase to admire on your kitchen table or night stand.

Beats the Cold and Comes Alive in Spring
This foreign-born species has the genetic power to withstand extreme cold weather. There’s no need to worry about it being affected by a brutal ice storm.

This camellia is a late bloomer compared to other varieties. It blooms in early spring displaying the last spectacular camellia blossoms of the season.

Easy to Grow
The Korean Fire is an adaptable plant built to thrive even in heavy clay and sandy soils. Place your plant in part shade and water it once a week. Then, watch as it slowly grows into a centerpiece that you can admire for years to come.

Stands Out and Complements Any Garden
This camellia variety adds a unique look to any garden style with its shape and color. The rounded curvature of the shrub and its foliage softens traditional and Japanese gardens and rounds out the background of cottage and courtyard gardens. It even complements tropical gardens because of the lush green color of the leaves and fiery, cone-shaped flowers.

This plant also works wonders as a showier border hedge. Impress your neighbor with lovely blooms dividing the properties. Plus, pulling into your drive will feel like you’ve arrived at your very own botanical garden as you’re greeted by these brightly colored flower petals floating in a sea of greenery.

Shade Gardeners Dream Plant
If your yard is hiding under the shadow of a dense canopy of trees, you often feel limited when it comes to color. Fortunately, Korean Fire camellias love the shade! Break out of the box and fill dark spaces with masses of color.

Add Culture and History to Your Garden
Gardeners love to talk about their plants and the Korean Fire has a particularly interesting story for you to share about how your camellia bravely made its way to the US.

In 1984, Plant Explorer Barry Yinger bribed his way through a military outpost and ferry to hunt down the seeds for this camellia plant that grew wild at the edge of South Korea’s border on an island overlooking North Korea.

Incite curiosity as you recount the daring expedition that brought this plant from the trenches of political divide to grow right in your very own garden.

Let the Korean Fire speak to your adventurous nature as you order one today!

Color to Behold
This plant was very healthy when it arrived and even had a couple of buds. It is growing rapidly and I’m sure we will have full blooms this fall. The flower itself is very colorful and the Bush in Full bloom will enhance my front yard flower garden. Eventually I want to add two more Korean fire bushes !

Healthy and strong. This is going to be a great colorful addition to my covered patio.
I'm so excited for a colorful large plant (hedge,) for my shaded patio. It arrived today, looking healthy as I could hope for, and the dirt was still moist. Nice and green still and only lost one leaf because of the attached tag. I love FGT and am like a kid on Xmas morning when I receive a box.

Well packaged, looks healthy
I can't comment on either growth or bloom, yet. The camellia only came several weeks ago and so far is doing well. Her leaves are glossy, she looks happy, but we'll not see blooms until late winter/early spring. In the meantime I hope she grows so I can begin pruning her into a tree. She does seem to like her growing spot so far.

Planting & Care

It's Easy to Plant & Care for Your Korean Fire Camellia

Korean Fire Camellia Planting Diretions

Location:  The Korean fire plant is cold hardier than other camellias. It grows well in USDA plant hardiness zones 6 to 9. When fully grown it reaches a height of 10 to 15 feet with a spread of 5 to 8 feet.

Planting Instructions:  Like most camellias, the Korean fire plant grows best in partial to full shade. Try to plant the camellia in a location that offers some protection during the cold winds of winter.

It prefers a planting location with organically rich well-draining, acidic soil with a pH level of 6.0 to 6.5.

Plant the Korean fire plant in the fall or winter months.

Till the soil of the planting site and add a generous amount of peat moss or organic compost to the soil.

Dig a planting hole that is twice the diameter of the plant’s root ball and just as deep.  Ideally, the top of the plant’s root ball should sit 1 ½ inches below the soil’s surface. Fill the hole in and tamp the soil down around the Korean fire plant’s roots to remove air pocket. Water the plant thoroughly after planting to help settle the soil and remove any additional air pockets around its root system.

Mulching: Apply a 2 to 3-inch layer of mulch around the base of the plant to keep the soil moist to deter weed growth. Use shredded bark as mulch for best results.

Irrigation: Keep the soil moist for the first year of growth.

Fertilizing: Fertilize your camellia in the spring after the flowers have dropped. Do not fertilize sick or distressed camellias or when temperatures are above 90 degrees because this can result in leaf burning. Using a soluble fertilizer for acid loving plants once or twice a month in spring and mid-summer is best. Water the fertilizer into the soil thoroughly.  Follow the directions on the fertilizer’s label for application ratios.

Pruning: Camellias rarely require pruning. However, the plant will tolerate moderate pruning on occasion. Prune the plant after flowering in the mid summer. Remove any broken or damaged branches. Thinning out the interior branches and shortening the lower limbs will encourage the Korean fire plant to grow in an upright pattern.

Pest Control: After flowering apply a horticultural oil spray to prevent scale and other insect pests. Follow the directions on the horticultural oil spray for application ratios.
