Why Ice Cream Banana Trees?

A fast-growing, cold-tolerant variety, our Ice Cream Banana Tree is known for its hardy qualities and delicious taste...especially since it produces fruit that actually tastes like ice cream. And you get a tropical look plus amazing strength, since this tree boasts substantial leaves, a strong trunk and well-developed root system that holds up well against the elements.

Plus, it's an effortlessly-growing specimen with gigantic leaves and a stout, sturdy trunk. The lime green leaves are complemented by blue-tinted bananas that give the tree its nickname: Blue Java Banana Tree.

Pollination Info

Ice Cream Banana Tree Pollination

Ice Cream Banana Trees are self-fertile. You will get fruit with only one plant. However, adding an additional Ice Cream Banana Tree will drastically increase the size of your crop.

Planting & Care

Note: Banana leaves are huge and can sometimes get crinkled in shipping. Simply remove any damaged or worn leaves to stimulate the growth of new leaves. Use them to wrap meat for your next barbecue. During the growing season you will see fresh new leaves appear every few days.

1. Planting: Ice Cream Bananas can tolerate partial shade, but need at least six hours of sunlight a day. Banana Trees don’t like extreme heat, so afternoon shade will be more beneficial for your tree than morning shade. Avoid areas that receive high winds. If you keep it indoors, place your banana tree by a large sunny window.

Once you’ve scouted your planting location, dig a hole that’s twice as wide as the pot and just as deep. Place your tree in the hole, and make sure that it’s level with the surrounding ground and that it’s standing straight up. Gently back fill the hole, tamping down to prevent air pockets and give your tree a long, slow drink of water. Finally, mulch the planting site to conserve water moisture and keep grass and weeds away from the tree.

2. Watering: Keep your soil moist, but not oversaturated. Water your tree every 2 to 3 days during the summer, and every few weeks in the winter, depending on your climate. Warmer areas that are more prone to drought will require water more frequently. If your tree is in a shady area, it will most likely require less water.

But if you're not sure when to water your tree, simply check the soil about 2 inches down - if the soil is dry here, it's time to water.

3. Fertilizing: Give your tree a well-balanced organic fertilizer once a month during the growing season. Fertilizer will have a recommended dose for the size of your tree on the back of the package. We recommend giving your tree half of that dose for best results.

4. Pruning: Remove any damaged or broken leaves that hang downwards. After your tree produces fruit, trim it back to about 30 inches tall, and let the stem dry out for a week or two. Once the stem has dried, remove it. This will allow new banana tree stalks to grow.

FAQs

How long does it take to grow a Blue Java Banana Tree?

Do Blue Bananas taste good?

Blue Bananas are regularly compared to a vanilla custard or ice cream in taste and consistency. Many people enjoy them for the sweet flavor they have.

When Do I Water My Ice Cream Banana Tree?

Keep your soil moist, but not oversaturated. Water your tree every 2 to 3 days during the summer, and every few weeks in the winter, depending on your climate. Warmer areas that are more prone to drought will require water more frequently. If your tree is in a shady area, it’ll most likely require less water.

Amazing banana tree, super fast growing

I’m astonished how quickly my banana tree grew- from @2 ft to 20ft in 2 years with hardly any maintenance and has multiplied. Last year it produced @100 delicious sweet bananas. It just started blooming this year and looks like there will be over 200+ , I will need a ladder and long cutters to get them down this year. Pretty and tropical in our south Florida landscaping. Highly recommended!

Healthy tree

My sisters got together and purchased an ice cream banana tree for my birthday back in 2020, I kept it potted at first and it started producing pups after just a few months. I planted it in my yard soon after, but it was before 2021. For reference we live just south of Houston TX. We have clay soil here and we go below freezing at least once a year. I definitely recommend bringing your tree inside or covering it if it gets to be below freezing in your zone, otherwise it will die to the ground, depending on how cold it gets will determine if the whole plant dies or if the corm remains viable for more pups; for this reason I always have pups in pots I can bring in, just in case my banana trees don't come back after winter. After planting it in my yard the tree started fruiting around October of 2022 and it's now 2023 and I have my first ripened fruit. The tree has put off so many pups that I've been able to plant multiple trees in other parts of my yard and my sister's yard as well. 2022 is the first year the mother plant has put out fruit and because they started fruiting later in the year, I had to cut off the fruit and let it ripen on my counter for a few weeks. The fruit is very tasty and similar to, if not the same as, the grocery store banana's you might purchase. I'm wondering if the fruit will end up tasting different depending on how long it's left on the tree and/or if it gets better/different soil and nutrients. I have consistently put fresh compost and compostable items at the base of the tree(s) for as long as I've been caring for it. The bananas I've seen so far are a bit smaller, but I have to say I can't remember if ice cream bananas are smaller in general or if it's because I had to cut their growing season short due to their late yield and the cold. I definitely recommend fast growing tree's as well as the ice cream banana tree, don't hesitate to purchase if you want beautiful foliage for your yard, tasty bananas, and a good place to dump your kitchen scraps without having to break them down in compost first! 10/10 for me!
