New York Trees
Finding the best trees to plant in a state as diverse as New York can be a challenge. Different considerations will be required for the many New York regions – Adirondack, Capital District, Catskill, Finger Lakes, Niagara, Hudson Valley and, of course, New York City. You might be looking for trees for a roof top garden, to frame the porch of a row house, or for shade in a large back yard.
Many fall foliage fans enjoy the official New York State tree – the sugar maple. New York soil, which is somewhat acidic throughout the entire state, is also excellent for the attractive Summer Red Maple, Autumn Blaze Maple, and the Scarlet Red Maple, available from the Fast Growing Trees Nursery.
The Best Trees for Planting in New York
Other outstanding New York tree choices will include specimens that are suited to your climate conditions, demonstrating cold and wind resistance as well as mildew and disease resistance.
Look for types of trees that are fast growing and hardy. If you need a screen or windbreak, go for the Lombardy Poplar or Thuja Green Giant Arborvitaes. Hemlocks have long been a popular New York evergreen, but recent diseases have made this a tree we don’t recommend. For shade, we suggest Autumn Purple Ash, Tulip Poplar, or Gingko trees in addition to oak and maple trees. Whether you are looking for a weeping willow, or flowering trees such as the Okame Cherry or the popular Royal Empress, you can find a broad variety on this site.
