Planting & Care

1. Planting: To ensure the best results for your Oregon Grape, choose an area with full sun to partial shade. The Grape Holly tolerates shade well and also grows easily in well-drained soil with average moisture.

Start by digging a hole that’s at least two to three times the size of your plant’s root ball. After placing your plant, backfill the soil, tamp down to ensure air pockets are eliminated and water your newly-planted shrub.

2. Watering: Water your shrub regularly – weekly during normal weather or twice weekly in extreme heat. If you’re not sure when to water or how much to water, check the soil around your plant. If the soil is dry 2 to 3 inches down, it’s time to water.

3. Fertilizing: Fertilize your shrub new growth begins in the spring or during the summer. For a neater look, prune it annually to shape.

4. Pruning: For a neater look, prune it annually to shape.

Healthy specimen

The shrub was packaged well and appears healthy. It has a stray branch or two that makes the shape appear odd. Since it's a new planting, I expect that there will be enough new growth by the end of the season that I can prune it into a more symmetric shape. It even has a few small blooms already.

Qualified endorsement

I have grown some Oregon grape hollies for 15 years in climate zone 4, which is colder than their advertised rating of zone 5. In winter, many of the leaves are killed and turn brown, but do not readily fall off. For the bushes to look attractive it is necessary to individually remove the dead leaves. That is difficult because they are strongly attached and very prickly -- although that prevents deer from eating them. By late spring, the plants then sprout new branches, flowers and leaves and once again look attractive. So, even if planted in a warmer climate zone, be warned that dealing with the very prickly leaves can be a drawback. Some of them fall to the ground beneath the bush as it grows outwards and are difficult to remove.

Oregon grape hollies

I purchased Oregon grape hollies from Fast Growing Trees. They were packaged very well and were beautiful plants. Can’t wait to see them grow.
