Versatile Uses
The cold-hardy Wintergreen Boxwood, also known as Korean Boxwood, is an incredibly versatile shrub. It adds appeal to casual or formal landscape designs. When grouped, Wintergreen complements most any garden grouping and looks fantastic in decorative pots to accent a deck or patio. When planted in a row the Wintergreen Boxwood becomes a hedge that can be squared off or rounded to create a neat and attractive border or foundation accent. It's not uncommon to see this hedge used as a backdrop for showy centerpiece plants in the garden.

Don't hesitate to flank your driveway or walkway border with a row of Wintergreen Boxwood, as it truly gives an elegant look at a small cost. Wintergreen also pairs well to offset perennial flowers and roses for a quintessential English garden look. If yard space is limited, the compact size of the Wintergreen Boxwood provides a perfectly proportioned design element for a clean natural look.

Get Creative! It's Easy to Shape
This evergreen beauty responds well to pruning and is commonly shaped into globes, boxes, or ovals. This dense shrub performs like a superstar when shaped into topiary designs or even bonsai art.  The slow-growing Wintergreen Boxwood typically gains only 2-3 inches annually, maturing to heights of about 3 feet with a 4-5 foot spread - if left alone.  The best news is - once you've molded yours into the desired shape, there will be little upkeep to keep it looking that way.

Exceptional Green Foliage
The foliage on the Wintergreen Boxwood stands out from your typical green shrub. Its leaves are oval in shape and appear to be delicate.  The small leaves lend a finely-textured look as their bright green hues darken slightly with age. An ongoing two-tone feature of bright and dark green foliage adds depth to this ornamental shrub. It even maintains its bright green color during winter months when other boxwoods can yellow. When other shrubs have lost their shine in winter, Boxwood keeps its delightful green glow.

Hassle-Free
The Wintergreen Boxwood is adaptable to most soil types.  It's pest, deer and disease resistant. It's just as easy to grow for the beginning gardener as for the novice grower.  If you're hesitant to attempt your hand at shaping it, no worries, it's a gorgeous shrub in its natural state.

So far so good

They shipped the week they were supposed to (I bought early and got a great price). Shipping was 2 days, the boxes were well marked and arrived not damaged. I opened them immediately. Some had a few brown leaves but looked healthy overall. They were the size expected based on what I ordered. The base was bagged and secured with a zip tie that was as lightly secured so it didn’t harm the plant. Very little dirt was in the bags. I watered them immediately as instructed and set them out of the sun. I was able to plant them within 2 days. They seemed fine when I planted and we were doused with rain the next day. Hopefully they are happy in their new home.

Part of a HOped for Noise Barrier!

This dense moderate sized shrub is planted as a visual and noise barrier for the new standby generator we have installed at our home. They look great already and will grow though a bit slowly for their full usefulness. Healthy plants arrived potted and in very good condition.

Planting & Care

The Wintergreen Boxwood (Buxus microphylla 'Wintergreen') is known for its dense foliage that stays green year round. Reaching mature heights of 2-4 feet, they’re commonly pruned into ovals, boxes or globes but can be left to grow naturally and will take on a toadstool mushroom shape. They’re great for creating a formal hedge or a matching border but also look great when planted on either side of an entryway. The boxwood will do well in growing zones 5-8 and are known to be cold hardy down to -10 degrees.

Location: Choose a location where your wintergreen boxwood will receive full or partial sunlight.  If you live in an area that gets very hot, they will do best when given some afternoon shade. To avoid winter bronzing, plant your boxwood in an area where it will be protected from harsh winter winds, preferably close to a building. Well draining soil is a must and they perform best when pH levels are between 6.5 and 7. To create a hedge, plant your boxwoods 4 feet apart, otherwise plant them 6-8 feet apart to create a more spaced look.

Planting Instructions:
1) Dig a hole the same depth as the root ball and twice as wide.
2) Place the boxwood upright into the hole ensuring it is straight and begin to back fill the hole. Watering every couple inches to prevent air pockets from forming.
3) Once the hole is completely filled, gently pat down the soil and give your plant a deep watering.
4) To help retain moisture in the soil and deter weed growth, apply a 2-3 inch deep layer of mulch around the base of the boxwood extending 12 inches past the foliage. Make sure that the mulch is 2-3 inches away from the trunk of the plant. If it is touching the boxwood then rot and fungus may set in.

Watering: Water the Wintergreen Boxwood deeply to ensure the roots are getting adequate moisture. The soil should stay moist but not saturated as this can lead to root rot. Once it has established it will need a weekly watering during periods of drought or extreme heat.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced shrub fertilizer formula such as 10-10-10 in Spring before the start of new growth. Avoid applying fertilizer within 6 inches from the main stem of the boxwood to prevent root burn.

Pruning: Wintergreen Boxwoods respond well with a bit of pruning. During the first 2 years of growth, prune your boxwood to your desired shape after new growth in Spring. In the following years, the tips of the shrub will need to be pruned to maintain its shape.

Pests: Although the Wintergreen Boxwood is virtually pest and disease resistant, boxwood leaf miner is possible. Yellowing foliage can be a sign of this and should be treated with a horticultural oil or insecticide spray.
