Lemon Tree to Ficus: Top 4 Beginner Plants

Blair Brown — May 17, 2022

There's never a bad time to enjoy indoor plants, and lucky for you, we have plenty of options to fill your needs and preferences! Whether you're planting indoors or outdoors, plant care can be daunting. That's why we've compiled our top four  plants that are perfect for beginners. These varieties are lush, luxuriant and best of all, low-maintenance, no matter where they grow. Keep reading to learn more about these favorites!

1. Meyer Lemon Tree

So, why is the lemon tree, and more specifically our Meyer Lemon Tree, perfect for beginners? For starters, it has remarkable cold and heat tolerance, so anyone in the country can grow it. Basically, if your winters get cold, simply bring your Meyer Lemon Tree indoors. Since our trees max out at around 8 feet, you don’t have to worry about them out-growing your space.

And they’re already at a heavy fruiting size, with well-developed branching structures. Some of these trees have been grown for up to 4 to 5 years and have fruited for several seasons already, making them a staple amongst those without a green thumb.

Just plant your lemon tree in a warm, sunny area (6+ hours of sun) where the soil drains well. If you're planting in a container, select one that's 1 to 2 pot sizes larger than the one your tree arrived in. Then, fill with a well-draining cactus or citrus soil, 2 inches of compost, water well, and place near a south-facing window.

2. Cold Hardy Avocado Tree

Home-grown avocados, no matter where you live, have never been easier! The strong Cold Hardy Avocado Tree makes it a breeze, especially since this tough tree withstands frigid temperatures as low as 20 degrees, living up to its name.

Plant yours in a container using well-draining soil and bring it inside during the winter months where it will continue to grow. You’ll get an abundant yield of fruit, year after year, with proper care. Just place it in front of a sunny window, water weekly and watch the ravishing results!

3. Cast Iron Plant

Aptly named for its strength, the Cast Iron Plant is the perfect house plant, especially for those who travel or those who simply don’t have a green thumb. Because it doesn’t require a lot of attention, and unlike most plants, doesn’t need much light, it adds a trendy touch to your interior without the fuss.

Plus, because it’s an evergreen variety, it will impress season after season. And due to its robust nature, growers have reported their plants surviving even freezing temperatures with no damage.

Plant your Cast Iron Plant indoors in well-draining soil in a pot with drainage holes. Then, place it near an east-facing window that's free from drafts. Water deeply once the top layer of soil dries out, and enjoy!

4. Braided Benjamina Ficus

It’s the most popular plant in interior design for a reason! The Benjamina Ficus Tree, also known as the Weeping Fig, is synonymous with chic. Boasting glossy, deep green leaves, which are dense and can be shaped into various forms, the Benjamina is able to be simply sheared or sculpted to your desired shape.

And since we meticulously braid the trunk, it’s ready to shine in the ground or in your favorite container. We’ve done all the work, so when you receive this plant, minimal care and fuss means instant luxe!

Simply, place this plant in an area with bright or filtered sunlight, avoiding direct sun and cooler areas, and water once a week. Ficus trees are rapid growers and need lots of nutrients, so be sure to feed your potted tree once a month in the spring and summer.

Plants for beginners don’t have to be dull or boring – from our Lemon Tree to our Braided Benjamina, we’ve covered the bases on hassle-free yet heightened looks. You don’t have to have a green thumb to purchase these plush plants. Even better? We have plenty of other low-maintenance favorites for you to peruse. Shop all house plants, fruit trees and more!
