Love the tiny lilac blooms in the early summer, but don't stay long. We have pruned several times to get the shape . The dark purple-red foliage is beautiful, however in North eastern Kentucky, with one hard frost, which we had this year bit the tender leaves at the top, but will come back later. I would recommend this tree and love it. BTW, it's in our front yard as a specimen.

Pretty plant, no pot
The tree appears to be healthy and has good shape. Was shipped without a pot, but was not advertised as bare root. Came as a pot shaped bag of dirt. Fortunately, I was ready to plant right away so it was not an issue. Looks happy and healthy in its new sunny location. Hoping for a small show next season.

Too small plant, hardly 4-5 inches
Plants arrived in good shape, but, the plants are too too small. They are hardly 4-5 inches tall, and no leaves at all. Hope they will grow bigger. Again, I could have bought a 18-24 inches tall royal purple, and fully grown in Calloways just for $8 more. Again as Fast growing trees claim, the quality of the plant is good. I bought the one year warranty too.

Great beautiful tree!
Got this tree in fantastic shape and let it sit on my shaded deck until it adapted to the hot and humid summer of north central Arkansas. Planted it to give my "shady garden" more shade and it's doing fantastic. No dead or dying anything and that is saying something with some other companies whom I've bought trees from.

Planting & Care

It's Easy to Plant & Care for Your Royal Purple Smoke Tree

Royal Purple Smoke Tree Planting Diretions

The Royal Purple Smoke Tree (Cotinus coggygria ‘Royal Purple’) is a stunning red-purple shrub with clusters of filaments that look like purple puffs of smoke. Left unpruned, it will grow into an irregular round shape, but can also be pruned into a tree form. It produces small, yellow-green flowers that grow in groups. These flowers will produce the purple “hairs” that you’ll see accompanying the foliage. Look for the leaves to change scarlet red in the fall! With a mature height of 10-15 feet and width of 12-15 feet, it’s an ideal plant for a smaller garden and anyone looking for a “pop” of color. Recommended for USDA zones 5-9, it can withstand temperatures down to -10 degrees and is a moderate grower at rates of 1-2 feet per year.

Location: Choose a location where your tree will receive full sunlight (at least 6 hours a day). It can tolerate some shade, but does best when getting full sunlight. It’s able to grow in a wide range of soils, but be sure the soil is well-draining and has a pH between 3.7 and 6.8 for the best results.

Planting Instructions:
1) Dig a holes for your tree that is at least three times as wide as the root ball and equal in depth.
2) Amend the soil with 2 to 3 inches of compost and work it in well with your existing soil to help with drainage.
3) Remove your tree from the container and gently loosen the roots by hand to ensure they grow in a spreading manner.
4) Place your tree in the hole and position it so that the top of the roots are even with the ground and the tree is standing upright.
5) Begin backfilling the hole with the amended soil, tamping down lightly as you go.
6) Once the hole is completely filled, give your tree a deep watering to remove any air pockets and settle the soil.
7) Apply 2 to 3 inches of mulch around the tree, ensuring that it doesn’t touch the trunk or rot and fungus may form.

Watering: Ensure the soil around your tree stays moist but not wet during the first few months while establishing. Test the soil by feeling down 2-3 inches to determine if it’s dry and needs additional water. These trees are fairly drought resistant once established and will only need water every 1-2 weeks, depending on your climate.

Fertilization: Fertilizing is not recommended for the Royal Purple Smoke Tree and can actually cause them to die prematurely.

Pests and Diseases: Remove any damaged or diseased branches immediately to help prevent a condition known as verticillium wilt. Black or tan spots on leaves can be an indication of a bacteria and can be treated with a fungicide.

Pruning: Little to no maintenance is required when growing it as a shrub. Any dead or diseased branches can be pruned in early spring before growth appears. They can be pruned to grow as a tree-form, but this should be done when planting and will require more pruning. To do this, select a main stem and prune the other branches away, keeping more growth at the top.

My mother had a smoke bush, and I have had one in every place I lived. They grow tall, bushy and gorgeous - if planted in the sun and allowed to grow free. Had one that I pruned to column shape, but didn't love it as much as the full, wild look. If fertilized, it will grow pretty fast.
