Low Maintenance Evergreen

Nigra Thuja is the Tree for all Seasons
Here's why:

  • Attractive Evergreen with year round interest
  • Cold tolerant and disease resistant
  • Low maintenance tree
  • Dense foliage makes an excellent screen

Nigra Thuja's Brilliant Color Lasts the whole year through

When you plant Nigra Thuja Trees throughout your landscape you'll be rewarded with a winter wonderland that lasts all year long. That's because this tree absolutely thrives in harsh, cold weather, but does equally as well any season of the year. The rich, emerald green color of this amazing evergreen never fades. Its fanlike foliage creates a dense, functional screen that will provide the ultimate privacy.

Why build a fence when you can let Thuja do the job and add beauty to your property? Topping out at a height of 20 feet tall with a spread of 5-10 feet wide, it's a moderate grower that won't interfere with overhead structures or powerlines. With a lifespan of over 50 years, Thuja will provide your family with a generation of solitude and beauty.

Everything you wanted in a tree just got a whole lot easier

Another great feature of the Nigra Thuja is you won't have to fuss with it. This tree requires little to no maintenance. Just trim the horizontal growth to your liking whenever necessary or just let it grow naturally. It's as easy to care for as a picket fence-except you'll never have to repaint its incredible green color! Aside from privacy, many enthusiasts take advantage of the lovely, cashmere-like texture of this tree. Use it to line pathways, in foundation plantings, as an accent or specimen.

The possibilities with the Nigra Thuja are endless. Bring home this green beauty today.

Planting & Care

It's Easy to Plant & Care for Your Nigra Thuja

Step 1: Dig Your Hole

Select a site with full to partial sun and moist or well drained soil for your Nigra Thuja.

First, dig each hole so that it is just shallower than the root ball and at least twice the width.

Then loosen the soil in the planting hole so the roots can easily break through.

Use your shovel or try dragging the points of a pitch fork along the sides and bottom of the hole.

Planting & Care

Step 2: Place Your Plant

Next, separate the roots of your Nigra Thuja gently with your fingers and position them downward in the hole.

The top of the root flare, where the roots end and the trunk begins, should be about an inch above the surrounding soil.

Then make sure the plant is exactly vertical in the hole.

To make it just right, use a level.

Step 3: Backfill Your Hole

As you backfill the hole, apply water to remove air pockets.

Remove debris like stones and grass and completely break up any dirt clumps.

Water your Nigra Thuja again after the transplant is complete.

what is the diameter of the pot that the 1-2 foot plants come in?

I'm looking for something that can withstand a lot of water. My fence line gets soggy when it rains a lot. Will this work?
Stacy L on Mar 3, 2018
BEST ANSWER: From what I read, no arborvitae other than the original Thuja Occidentalis (swamp cedar) can tolerate standing water for too long, repeatedly. Definitely not the Emerald Green Arb. (Smaragd). Be careful with arbs and soil that doesn't drain, I had to install a french drain for soggy post-rain soil and hopefully all my emeralds will survive! None of the nurseries or arborists I've spoken to have recommended Arbs for soggy soil though they've said the green giant is the most tolerant.
