I ordered 8 of the 1-2 feet of these trees. They arrived very well packed. Given the cross-country delivery and recent hot weather, I am very pleased with how well they look when I opened the package, even though there are a few with bottom branches damaged, which did not seem to be a big deal for me. After planning the plant area a bit better, I realise that we actually need 7 more of these right away. There was not enough time to order again from this website and wait for the delivery. So we went to our local Lowes (note, we didnot even try to find other cheaper or better alternatives from this particular Lowes that was convenient for us). Only to find out the ones from local shop at least for now look much better and bushy and taller and cheaper. I am going to plant the ones from this site and the ones from Lowes in a row and we shall see who will win the competition in a few months time and report back. I noticed the ones from this site have fertilizer scattered on the top surface, which is good and thoughtful of this seller.

Disappointed
I bought 25 trees to finish the last edge of my boarder around my back yard. All other trees have been purchased locally and I figured I could save some money by purchasing these online. I was very happy when these plants arrived as they all looked to be in good shape and the price was great. Meticulously followed the planting instructions (which were helpful) and was pleased with the result.

Trees survived the winter nicely (my biggest concern) but went down hill as each day passed and the weather got nicer and are now all dead. The company has been good about trying to refund my costs of the tree (but not shipping and I had to shell out for a warranty...which based on how often its mentioned on the sale should have been a red flag to me). At the end of the day I will likely have spent the same as going to my local nursery and not have had to deal with all the hassle (planting, digging up, customer service calls, getting a dumpster to dispose of 25 dead trees, and eventual replanting). Others seem to have had better luck so maybe it was just a bad batch that was sold to me.

Trees arrived looking very healthy. My only negative is that they were very much on the 12"" side of size, when advertised at 1-2 feet. Seems we got the little ones. Nevertheless, excellent quality and delivery. Hope they all make it

Planting & Care

It's Easy to Plant & Care for Your Emerald Green Arborvitae

Emerald Green Arborvitae Planting Diretions Plant your Emerald Green Arborvitae in area that receives full to partial sunlight. Emerald Green Thujas can tolerate shade, but prefer full sunlight. A southward facing area of your home would recieve the most sunlight. For a hedge place your Emerald Green Thujas two to three feet apart and their foliage will quickly fill in. If your soil is sandy or heavy in clay your Emerald Green Thuja will quickly adapt to it as long as your soil is well draining.

Watering your Emerald Green Thuja is very important while it's getting established. For the first two weeks after planting your Emerald Green Thuja water it every day. Hold the hose and count to 20 for a deep watering. After two weeks water your Emerald Green Thuja every three days. After the first month Your Emerald Green Thuja will only need water once a week, unless the weather is very dry, then water twice a week. Once your Emerald Green Thuja has been planted for six months it wont need any extra water.

Emerald Green Thujas usually don't need any fertilizer. If you want to give them an extra boost give them a slow releasing fertilizer early every Spring or Fall. If your Emerald Green Thuja doesn't have the right hue, check the pH balance of your soil with a pH meter. Your soil should be between 5.5 and 7.0. Add Aluminum Sulfate to lower your pH balance, and add lime to make the pH balance higher.

Great hedging trees.

I purchased Emerald Green Arborvitae as a privacy hedge between my property and my neighbor. I will have to wait several years to enjoy the full benefit of privacy but I will enjoy watching these bright evergreens grow. I initially planted 10 and have order an additional 20 because I like the plant so much.

I like these trees, but they are not as tough as I would like , I have already replaced several of them and I am slowly replacing them with the Italian Cypress but only if they don't make it because they are beautiful trees, I still have 10 of them planted that have survived, so I love these trees . They grow tall and slim and are great to line my drive way.

In a mountain community with cold snowy winters, we have crabapple trees growing along a fence in our backyard. There is a house very close on the other side of the fence The crabapples are deciduous, of course, so we need a row of narrow tall trees that are evergreen to provide privacy without intruding too much on the crabapples. We hope the emerald green arborvitae will do the job.

how fast does the emerald green Thuja grow?
cheryl S on Jun 9, 2014
BEST ANSWER: I've only had my emerald green Thujas for a year now, but I've noticed significant growth in that time. Probably 4-5 inches! I planted mine as a privacy hedge with each tree about 3 feet apart. If the growth continues, I think that within the next two years, there will be no gap between the trees!
how close to home foundation can this be planted ?
Peggy A on Apr 20, 2015
BEST ANSWER: You could plant as close as 2 foot to the foundation.
how far to plant from chain link fence?
anthony p on Apr 25, 2015
BEST ANSWER: If you want the trees to clear the fence, plant them 3-4 feet from it; if you don't mind if they touch the fence, 2 to 2 1/2 feet would suffice.
We would like to have the emerald green(s) in large decorative pots outside on deck year round in MN. Have been told by local companies that these will not survive the winter in pots????? Can you help
Peter L on Oct 7, 2014
BEST ANSWER: The Emerald green thujas are very cold hardy that is a plus. I see no reason why they should not do well in pots on your deck. Keep in mind that since the trees are in pots on a deck above the ground, the roots will get much colder than if they were in the ground. So we would recommend to insulate or wrap the pots through the colder months, to keep them extra safe.
Can these be cut off at the top and not die?
How to cut back and make smaller?
A shopper on Jun 29, 2014
BEST ANSWER: you can trim just like any conifer ,, best to do in fall or very early spring,,,,,,
When is the best time to plant these in Kentucky? Would now (July/August) be okay?
shopper on Jun 26, 2014
BEST ANSWER: If temperatures aren't scorching hot you can go ahead and plant these trees. However if it's consistently above 90 degrees it would be better to wait until the early Fall to plant them.
I live in lake Tahoe ca about 6300ft, will the thuja tree do alright at this altitude and is a zone 3 4?
larry b on Jan 26, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes. The growing zones are 3-8.
Are they pest resistant?
A shopper on Jul 5, 2014
BEST ANSWER: I live in Memphis, TN and planted them about two years ago. There is no evidence of any damage from pests, and I do not spray the plants with anything. So from bug pests, I would say yes, they are resistant. I do not know if deer will eat them.
Will these trees do well in Central FL?
Velinda D on Jun 9, 2014
BEST ANSWER: Central Florida is a little too warm for Emerald Green Thujas. The Leyland Cypress would be better for your area.
i live in zone 7-8 have 15 Thuja emerald planted about 1 year .When to fertilize and with what product?
A shopper on Jul 9, 2014
BEST ANSWER: Emerald Green Thujas usually don't need any fertilizer. If you want to give them an extra boost give them a slow releasing fertilizer early every Spring or Fall. If your Emerald Green Thuja doesn't have the right hue, check the pH balance of your soil with a pH meter. Your soil should be between 5.5 and 7.0. BEST ANSWER: You can plant the Emerald green thuja next to your foundation, sidewalks, etc... they do no have disturbing roots.
how much of the planting mix needs to be ordered for 6 of the 2-3ft thuja?
A shopper on Jun 7, 2014
BEST ANSWER: I would recommend 1 per tree. The soil is meant as an amendment only, so it does not need to fill the entire hole when planting.
Will these do ok in a shady area?
p r on Oct 7, 2016
BEST ANSWER: If the area is not dense shade and it gets at least 3-4 hours of sunlight, the emerald green arborvitae should thrive as mine have. However, the growth rate is slower given the partial sun/shade conditions. I bought six of them last year, and they are a nice addition to my backyard landscape. I'm located in Zone 5/6 and they seem to withstand central Illinois' weather extremes from blistering hot and humid in the summer to cold, damp, ice, snow and occasional deep freeze temperatures in the winter. Hope this helps.
winter protection- what kind of mulch should i use for these trees (in pots) for winter in New York?
sharon b on Oct 3, 2015
BEST ANSWER: For winter protection you can use straw, mulch or shredded leaves.
what is the life span ?
A shopper on Jul 15, 2014
BEST ANSWER: In ideal conditions the Emerald Green Thuja should live about 30-60 years.
Would this tree be suitable for a container?
Andrea K on Jun 10, 2014
BEST ANSWER: I think that, in it's early stages, it would be fine in a container - and quite attractive. The roots don't seem to require a lot of room; mine are planted between two retaining walls. However, as it grows taller (over a period of years), I believe that it would become unwieldy. At that point, it would require planting.
Can these be spaced further than 3 feet if I don't want a dense hedge?
Anastasia H on Mar 7, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, they get 3-4 foot wide. So you can plant them as you would like.
Can the arborvitae be kept in a pot for a few months?
Patricia W on Nov 6, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, you can keep them in the pot until you are ready for planting.
I want to plant between two adjoining patios. Do I need to worry about root growth?
bicchip on Dec 16, 2015
BEST ANSWER: No need to worry, they have tap roots so they will grow down before they grow out.
are these trees smog resistant ?
lonna o on Oct 18, 2014
BEST ANSWER: Yes, these trees are very smog resistant and help to purify the air.
Can you plant these trees in September in Minnesota?
Louise H on Aug 14, 2014
BEST ANSWER: September is a great time to plant Emerald Green Thujas. This should give them enough time to get rooted in before winter.

BEST ANSWER: Hello

which one of these "fence" evergreen bushes are deer resistant?
marcy b on Sep 20, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Thuja Green Giants and Emerald Green Arborvitae are not bothered by deer in my area--and I have a deer problem. Deer, however, will eat anything if hungry.
I plant 5 esmerald green thujas 4 months ago in Laredo tx but know they start to getting brow and dry what should I do?
Raquel D on Jul 23, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Hopefully you gave them a deep hole and loosened the root when planting and have given them the water they need, almost daily during this hot weather we are having. These trees are hardy and will grow well, after you have established them.. But you will be wasting your money if you plant them and don't water and care for them until they take hold.

I'm interested in the emerald green arborvitae; my soil is shallow with dense clay underneath with not great drainage; How does it do?

I live in albrightsville, pa where we have a lot of clay , will these trees survive?
Nicole J on May 21, 2017
BEST ANSWER: We have similar soil here in IN and the Arborvitae is a very popular choice. Ours have grown well with little maintenance. Should not have an issue in PA.
how deep & wide for a hole to plant a Emerald Green Arborvitae 1-2'?
Hong N on Apr 21, 2017
BEST ANSWER: My experience is that the width of the hole should be close to if not twice the diameter of the root ball. The width of the hole allows the roots to grow and spread. The depth of the hole should be about the depth of the root ball. You want to plant the arborvitae about even with or slightly lower than the ground level. Just avoid burying the root ball too deep. The root ball will settle after periodic rain or watering. Make sure your arborvitae receives sufficient moisture during the first year after planting. After the first year, this arborvitae is largely maintenance free.
