I ordered 8 of the 1-2 feet of these trees. They arrived very well packed. Given the cross-country delivery and recent hot weather, I am very pleased with how well they look when I opened the package, even though there are a few with bottom branches damaged, which did not seem to be a big deal for me. After planning the plant area a bit better, I realise that we actually need 7 more of these right away. There was not enough time to order again from this website and wait for the delivery. So we went to our local Lowes (note, we didnot even try to find other cheaper or better alternatives from this particular Lowes that was convenient for us). Only to find out the ones from local shop at least for now look much better and bushy and taller and cheaper. I am going to plant the ones from this site and the ones from Lowes in a row and we shall see who will win the competition in a few months time and report back. I noticed the ones from this site have fertilizer scattered on the top surface, which is good and thoughtful of this seller.

I bought 25 trees to finish the last edge of my boarder around my back yard. All other trees have been purchased locally and I figured I could save some money by purchasing these online. I was very happy when these plants arrived as they all looked to be in good shape and the price was great. Meticulously followed the planting instructions (which were helpful) and was pleased with the result.

Trees survived the winter nicely (my biggest concern) but went down hill as each day passed and the weather got nicer and are now all dead. The company has been good about trying to refund my costs of the tree (but not shipping and I had to shell out for a warranty...which based on how often its mentioned on the sale should have been a red flag to me). At the end of the day I will likely have spent the same as going to my local nursery and not have had to deal with all the hassle (planting, digging up, customer service calls, getting a dumpster to dispose of 25 dead trees, and eventual replanting). Others seem to have had better luck so maybe it was just a bad batch that was sold to me.

Trees arrived looking very healthy. My only negative is that they were very much on the 12"" side of size, when advertised at 1-2 feet. Seems we got the little ones. Nevertheless, excellent quality and delivery. Hope they all make it

Planting & Care

It's Easy to Plant & Care for Your Emerald Green Arborvitae

Emerald Green Arborvitae Planting Diretions

The Emerald Green Thuja (American Arborvitae) is a perfect evergreen for smaller spaces. Grow these trees as living screens that won’t overpower your entire lawn and garden with their size. The Emerald Green Thuja grows to a mature height of twelve feet high by three feet wide, and it grows between one and two feet per year.

This selection is rapidly becoming one of the most sought-after evergreens because it maintains its lush green color during the winter. (Many arborvitae trees turn a bronze or brown color on the tips of their branches during the winter months).

Planting Directions: Emerald Green Thuja trees grow best in full sun, but they can withstand partial shade (afternoon sun is best in this case). They are hardy in USDA zones 2-8, and will grow well in a variety of soil types. These arborvitaes are not as prone to damage from snow and ice as other selections. They're also more cold-tolerant.

Plant a hedge of Emerald Green Thuja trees for instant privacy. When first planted, they’ll screen your view from chest-height, down. They’ll quickly grow into a dense hedge that protects your privacy from all angles. For best results, plant these trees six feet apart to enjoy their pyramid shape or four feet apart for a dense hedge.

1) When planting Emerald Green Thujas, dig a hole that is just as deep as the root ball and twice as wide.
2) Remove the plant from the pot and set it in the hole to make sure that the hole is not too deep. (If you plant a tree too deep, it will rot at ground-level.) If the top of the root ball is lower than the surrounding soil, remove the tree and fill in part of the hole.
3) Replace the tree and fill in the hole with the same soil you removed. You do not need to add anything to the soil.
4) Mulch around the tree with shredded hardwood mulch. A layer three inches thick extending three feet around the tree is ideal. Pull the mulch one to three inches away from the trunk so that the trunk won’t rot.
5) Water your new tree by counting to 20 while holding the hose near the trunk or give the tree five watering cans full of water.

Watering: Water your new tree every day by holding a hose around it and counting to 20. If you don’t have a hose, five full large watering cans full of water will do. You’ll need to keep this up for the first two weeks.

The second two weeks, you can switch to watering every three days with the above method.

After the first month, water once a week unless it is dry and hot (no rain and temperatures above 80 degrees). If it is hot and dry, water twice a week.

After the first six months, the trees will be established and won’t need any extra water.

Pruning: The Emerald Green Thuja grows well without pruning. In fact, this is one tree that needs no pruning other than to remove dead branches. If you do decide to hedge this tree, make sure that when you trim, the bottom of the tree is wider than the top. If the top is wider than the bottom, the tree will die back from the ground, up.

Fertilizing: This tree does not need extra fertilizer. If the leaves are not the right color, the problem is likely the soil pH. Test the pH and add aluminum sulfate if the pH is too high, and lime if the pH is too low. (Normal pH is between 5.5-7.0.)

how far to plant from chain link fence?
anthony p on Apr 25, 2015

Peggy A on Apr 20, 2015

i live in zone 7-8 have 15 Thuja emerald planted about 1 year .When to fertilize and with what product?
A shopper on Jul 9, 2014
BEST ANSWER: Emerald Green Thujas usually don't need any fertilizer. If you want to give them an extra boost give them a slow releasing fertilizer early every Spring or Fall. If your Emerald Green Thuja doesn't have the right hue, check the pH balance of your soil with a pH meter. Your soil should be between 5.5 and 7.0. Add Aluminum Sulfate to lower your pH balance, and add lime to make the pH balance higher.

How long does it take to reach full growth?
BobbiejoT on Nov 5, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Once they are established in the ground, they can grow 12 to 18 " per year to reach a height of 8 to 12 feet at maturity.
Will these do ok in a shady area?
p r on Oct 7, 2016
BEST ANSWER: If the area is not dense shade and it gets at least 3-4 hours of sunlight, the emerald green arborvitae should thrive as mine have. However, the growth rate is slower given the partial sun/shade conditions. I bought six of them last year, and they are a nice addition to my backyard landscape. I'm located in Zone 5/6 and they seem to withstand central Illinois' weather extremes from blistering hot and humid in the summer to cold, damp, ice, snow and occasional deep freeze temperatures in the winter. Hope this helps.

sharon b on Oct 3, 2015

BEST ANSWER: Yes, they get 3-4 foot wide. So you can plant them as you would like.
Can the arborvitae be kept in a pot for a few months?
Patricia W on Nov 6, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes, you can keep them in the pot until you are ready for planting.

I plant 5 esmerald green thujas 4 months ago in Laredo tx but know they start to getting brow and dry what should I do?
Raquel D on Jul 23, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Hopefully you gave them a deep hole and loosened the root when planting and have given them the water they need, almost daily during this hot weather we are having. These trees are hardy and will grow well, after you have established them.. But you will be wasting your money if you plant them and don't water and care for them until they take hold.

Sure you can plant only two. I have five planted to cover a larger area. You can plant as many or as few as you like.
Can I plant these over water lines?
Brooke S on Dec 26, 2016

Can I plant this tree in front of my house columns just like a Italian Cypress tree? Thank you!

BEST ANSWER: You can, but this is not as narrow as Italian Cypress. It will be about four feet in diameter.
Are they deer resistant?
Priss on Jun 20, 2016
