The Centennial State enjoys a range of varied topography and elevation, which is an important consideration when you are designing your natural landscape. Because you want to maximize your trees' growth and survival chances with the minimum of maintenance, trees should be chosen to match your residential site’s soil types, temperatures and moisture, and light levels.
Trees and Plants for Colorado
Norway and Dwarf Alberta Spruces are great for Colorado’s colder regions, while the Gingko, White Dogwood, and Jane Magnolia can add color to the milder regions. Don’t forget the Scarlet and Crimson Maples when you want a blaze of fall color in your garden. Colorado fruit growers will love our Gala Apples, Black Tartarian Cherries, Key Limes, and Red Haven Peaches.
If you’re looking to upgrade the privacy of your property, consider planting a row of Thuja Emerald Green, Cryptomeria Radicans or Drought Free Evergreens. These fast-growing, feathery evergreens will enhance the beauty of your property’s boundary with their year-round dark green color while adding a sense of security.
Selecting and Planting Trees in Colorado
Whether you live in the Mountains, Foothills, Eastern Plains, Western Slope, Front Range, Palmer Divide or the Denver Metro Area, we have trees and shrubs to suit your needs.
Colorado’s state tree is the Blue Spruce. This tree has long green-blue needles and 2-4 inch-long, light brown cones. The Blue Spruce reaches heights of 25-98 feet. It has many cultivars that are grown for Christmas trees and ornamental trees.
Seitz is Colorado’s state soil. This mixture of organic matter and clay loam is found covering 350,000 acres. This type of soil has good drainage and is ideal for growing trees and shrubs. Other soil types include clay or sandy soil with poor drainage. If necessary you can amend your soil with manure, grass clippings and other organic matter to ensure your trees stay healthy and grow fast.
