Painted Beauty that will Frame the Landscape

At first glance, the Aucuba Japonica resembles an artist's rendering of a shrub painted on a masterpiece. The thick, glossy, green leaves are covered with splashes of bright yellow making the Aucuba a shrub worthy of attention. Adding to its luster are small purple flowers that play well against the colorful backdrop of speckled foliage. Finally, the tiny red berries that emerge in the winter will top off your shrub with a formal, holiday look that brings unmatched charm.

A Variety of Planting Options Abound

The visual appeal of the Aucuba combined with its strong tolerance to a variety of conditions makes it the perfect choice for a great number of planting scenarios. What's more, its slow growth makes it a convenient, low maintenance choice that practically puts the shrub on autopilot from the moment you plant it. Wonderful to fill in dark spaces beneath large trees, its tolerance to pollution and dry soils means it will work well even in tough urban environments.

Whether planted in containers, as a screen or hedge-even indoors-the Aucuba will thrive and rise to the occasion. Order yours today.

Planting & Care

It's Easy to Plant & Care for Your Variegated Aucuba

Step 1: Dig Your Hole

Select a site with full to partial sun and moist or well drained soil for your Variegated Aucuba.

First, dig each hole so that it is just shallower than the root ball and at least twice the width.

Then loosen the soil in the planting hole so the roots can easily break through.

Use your shovel or try dragging the points of a pitch fork along the sides and bottom of the hole.

Planting & Care

Step 2: Place Your Plant

Next, separate the roots of your Variegated Aucuba gently with your fingers and position them downward in the hole.

The top of the root flare, where the roots end and the trunk begins, should be about an inch above the surrounding soil.

Then make sure the plant is exactly vertical in the hole.

To make it just right, use a level.

Step 3: Backfill Your Hole

As you backfill the hole, apply water to remove air pockets.

Remove debris like stones and grass and completely break up any dirt clumps.

Water your Variegated Aucuba again after the transplant is complete.
