South Dakota Trees

South Dakota homeowners who want to enhance their residential landscape with fast-growing shade trees and shrubs should look no further than the Fast Growing Tree Nursery. Whether you live in South Dakota, western South Dakota or the Black Hills, we can help you find trees and shrubs that are perfect for your region.

The Mount Rushmore State enjoys a continental climate with four distinct seasons. Winters are cold and dry and summers are generally semi-humid and hot. The average high summer temperature is around 90 degrees Fahrenheit, cooling to around 60 degrees at night. SD often experiences severely hot and dry spells in the summer months.

The Best Trees for Planting in South Dakota

Wherever you live, from Buffalo to Sioux City, you’ll find what you’re looking for at our nursery, and we’ll help you choose the trees you need to enhance your residential landscape.

South Dakota’s state tree is the White Spruce. This tree is a large evergreen that grows between 49 and 98 feet tall with a diameter of up to around 3 feet. It has thin, flaky bark and produces slender cones around 2 ½ inches long.

South Dakota’s state soil is the Houdek series, designated in 1990. This soil is a dark, gray-brown loam and covers around 600,000 of the state’s acres. Often used for cropland, this is a productive soil and trees and shrubs will thrive in it.

South Dakota natural landscapes are often a mixture of hardy shade trees and flowering trees and shrubs that thrive in the Mount Rushmore State as well as fruit trees and evergreens. Choosing trees that can adapt to your climate zone and soil types will make caring for your landscape rewarding and low-maintenance.
