Planting a Cleveland Pear Tree is Hassle-free!
The Cleveland Pear is a compact growing tree (20-30 ft. high and only 15-20 ft. wide) which gives you more flexibility when selecting your site. First, dig a hole slightly shallower than the root ball and about twice the span of the root system. Use your shovel or other garden tool to scrape the soil on the walls of the planting hole so the roots can more easily penetrate as they grow.
Next, use your fingers to gently separate the roots and guide them downward in the hole. The root ball should be about an inch above the surrounding soil. Adjust the tree so that the best side of your Cleveland Pear is where you can see it. Make sure the tree is straight up and down in the hole (a level is very helpful here).
Now, backfill the hole in stages. Add water as you go to remove any air pockets. Water your Cleveland Pear tree again after the transplant is complete. To keep the soil moist it is recommended that you mulch around the tree. Use enough mulch to reach a depth of 2"-3" but keep a small circle around the tree trunk that is left uncovered with mulch.
