Thuja Green Giant Evergreens have been genetically bred to be the perfect tree for privacy screens and wind barriers. These trees keep their deep green color all year long! You have received young Thuja sapling, either 1-2 ft. tall, 2-3 ft. tall or 4-6 ft. tall. Let us tell you how to care for your new trees so that they thrive in their new home! Your trees have been packaged very carefully. However, they have still been in a dark box for several days and could have been exposed to extreme temperatures. Your new trees may look a bit dry upon arrival, but this is common and is nothing to be concerned about. Be sure to keep the roots of your Thuja Green Giant trees moist when you get them. Don't soak the roots; rather, make sure that the tree's surrounding soil is moist. Be careful not to over water them, because this will deprive your trees of much need oxygen. Once you receive your Thuja Green Giants, unpack them immediately. Spread out your plants and sprinkle the roots with water. Then, if possible, plant your trees immediately after. You can raise your odds of raising a beautiful tree by preparing the planting site properly. Planting Instructions The first step in planting healthy trees is to make sure your roots don't dry out. Often, root damage happens when trees are planted. Plant with damp, moist roots and minimize root pruning. The more healthy the roots are, the better the sapling will survive and grow. Dig a large hole and make plenty of room for the roots. Make sure it is twice the height and width of your tree's root system. Then, spread out the roots into the empty hole. Fill the hole with dirt, making sure there are no air pockets. If your roots settle in an air pocket, they can dry out and your tree could die. After the hole is filled with dirt, water your tree so that the soil will settle around the roots. Important Information: During times of drought, avoid planting your tree. Instead, pot your tree and place it in a well shaded area on your lawn. When your weather becomes more tolerable for a young tree, then go ahead and plant. Planting a Privacy Screen: When planting Thuja Green Giants as a privacy screen, space your trees between 4 and 8 feet apart for a solid barrier. Your privacy screen will eventually get to a height of 20 to 40 feet high. If you want your trees shorter, plant closer together. If you want them taller, plant further apart. Seasonal Planting: Try to plant your trees 6 weeks before your first frost. This will give your Thuja Green Giants a chance to adapt to their new environment. However, as long as the ground in your environment is not frozen you can plant your trees. Typically, your trees won't experience too much growth in times of extreme cold or heat. Once established, your new evergreens will need hardly any attention. Watering Information: Make sure your Thujas get water during drought times when young. Thuja Pruning: There won't be much need to prune your Thuja Green Giants. They grow in a narrow column when left alone. When planting in a screen, you can prune your tree to your desired height. Fertilizer: Thuja Green Giants respond well to fertilizer, but be sure to use slow release fertilizers so that the roots don't burn. Don't use strong fertilizers until your trees become more established. Weed Control: Keep all grass and weeds up to 2-3 feet away from the base of your Thuja Green Giant tree. Weeds and grass will take away nutrients and water away from your trees. |
