.) Shade your air conditioner. This alone can reduce your air conditioning bills by as much as 10%.
.) Plant evergreens along the northern edge of your property to form a windbreak. While this will help more with winter heating costs, now is the time to start planting for winter.
.) Plant deciduous shade trees along the east and west sides of your house. This will keep sunlight from streaming in your windows during the hottest parts of the day. In addition, deciduous trees lose their leaves in the fall and winter to allow sunlight through when you need it most.
.) Many ornamentals can be planted close to your home. Improved varieties of Crepe Myrtle Trees and Flowering Dogwood Trees provide excellent color in the spring and shade in the summer.
In addition to the guidelines mentioned above, it is also a good idea to plant shade trees along driveways and streets. Asphalt can reflect a large amount of heat back towards a house, and shade trees will help to deflect this heat away from your house.
