The indoor plant with the most color

Croton Petras are unique houseplants that set the bar high by having multiple vivid colors in their foliage, from vibrant yellows, greens, red and even a little purple. Most houseplants are one shade of boring green, but no one ever gets tired of looking at the vibrant Croton Petra.

The leaves have brighter color veins like yellow with a darker color like green in the middle to create a vivid show of contrasting color. The bright hues on the large, waxy oval shaped leaves give it a tropical look to brighten any space.

Croton Petras are compact container plants and will thrive anywhere indoors. Keep them on the kitchen table for a showy centerpiece or in the office to liven up a dull room. They can be kept in smaller containers for a desktop plant or in a larger container to grow into accent plants for the corners of the room.

If you live in growing zones 9 – 11 you can plant your Croton Petras outside and watch them grow up to 10 feet tall. When planted in a row their thick foliage will fill in to create a multi colored privacy hedge. They can be trained into a tree form to accent gardens and to add a splash of color wherever the landscape needs it.

This tropical plant takes the phrase low maintenance to a whole new level by being heat and drought tolerant. They don’t need a lot of time consuming hands on care, and will naturally fight of pests and diseases with ease. Simply wait for their soil to dry between watering sessions and enjoy tropical colors indoors and out.

Planting & Care

It's Easy to Plant & Care for Your Croton 'Petra'

Step 1: Dig Your Hole

Select a site with full to partial sun and moist or well drained soil for your Croton 'Petra'.

First, dig each hole so that it is just shallower than the root ball and at least twice the width.

Then loosen the soil in the planting hole so the roots can easily break through.

Use your shovel or try dragging the points of a pitch fork along the sides and bottom of the hole.

Planting & Care

Step 2: Place Your Plant

Next, separate the roots of your Croton 'Petra' gently with your fingers and position them downward in the hole.

The top of the root flare, where the roots end and the trunk begins, should be about an inch above the surrounding soil.

Then make sure the plant is exactly vertical in the hole.

To make it just right, use a level.

Step 3: Backfill Your Hole

As you backfill the hole, apply water to remove air pockets.

Remove debris like stones and grass and completely break up any dirt clumps.

Water your Croton 'Petra' again after the transplant is complete.

Why are the leaves falling off?

BEST ANSWER: It could be for a few reason, to much or not enough water, or may need to fertilize it.
